With a population of under 1,000, Thompson Township is about 50 minutes northwest of downtown Columbus. Despite that distance, some people who live in Thompson Township work there. “We are spoiled in the Columbus area because we’re ranked in the top 5 when it comes to ease of commutes,” says Janelle Blue, a Realtor with Cutler Real Estate who has sold homes in the area for nearly 10 years. “Even with high-tech jobs coming to the northeast suburbs of Columbus in a couple of years, we’re far away from that. There may be some growth, but I don’t expect much.” Intel plans to open two computer chip factories in New Albany in 2025, creating about 3,000 jobs.

Slowing down the pace and lowering the tax burden
Part of the growth from within the Columbus area has come from empty-nesters who want to downsize and don’t want to pay higher taxes closer to the city. “People are moving out of bigger homes to this area and opt for having more land and building a house in an area that doesn’t cost as much,” Blue says. The homes are on several acres and are classic, split-level, ranch-style, Cape Cod and Craftsman farmhouses. The price per square foot is $166, with the general price range from $200,000 to $450,000. There are older homes in Thompson Township, most dating to the mid-20th century. Some similar townships in this area have had more modern homes in small subdivisions, but that hasn’t happened as much here.

An airport and a large body of water
While less busy than John Glenn Columbus International Airport, Packer Airport is located in Thompson Township and is named after Richard Packer, who runs an independent aviation insurance agency. He’s also a flight instructor and an aircraft inspector. Whether in the air or on the ground, it’s easy to spot Packer Airport because it’s close to the John R. Doutt Upground Reservoir. The water, which is on 843 acres, helps provide water supply to Columbus area communities. Boating is not permitted on the reservoir to ensure it functions as it should, given the soil conditions in the area.

Schools with a good “word-of-mouth” score
Students in the area are part of the Buckeye Valley Local School District. “Some people have moved from the Columbus City School District to this one. While the district scores well on websites, it also has good “word-of-mouth” scores from people in this area.” Niche gives the district a B overall rating and is one of the largest districts by area. Buckeye Valley Elementary West has over 600 prekindergarten through fifth-grade students with a B-plus Niche grade. Buckeye Valley Middle and High Schools both have a B grade. Middle School students starting in the seventh grade can begin in the College Credit Plus program, the dual enrollment option in Ohio schools. Tuition and books are covered for eligible students, including non-public and homeschooled students. The Buckeye Valley High School marching Barons have participated in area parades and performed in the summer of 2023 at Cedar Point Amusement Park in northern Ohio.
