Delphos residents stay for generations
Tucked between farm fields and quiet county roads, Delphos is a small city of about 7,000 people in Northwest Ohio. The town got its start as a port town along the Miami-Erie Canal. The agricultural community is split between Allen and Van Wert counties and offers a laid-back, country vibe within a 30-minute drive of Lima. Once people plant roots in town, it’s rare for them to leave, according to Shaun Richardson, a Realtor with Exp Realty who grew up in Delphos. Many residents grew up in town and typically return, but if they don't come back, “It’s because they have to, like they got a job or someone passed away,” Richardson says.
Agriculture plays a starring role in the story of Delphos and its rich history.

Public and private school options in Delphos
Kids can attend public or private schools in town. Delphos City Schools has an enrollment of less than 1,000 students and receives a B-minus grade from Niche.
Kids can start at A-minus-rated Franklin Elementary School before heading to Jefferson Middle School, graded B-plus. Jefferson High School receives a C-plus. St. John The Evangelist Catholic School, rated B-minus, is a private Catholic pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 school with an enrollment of about 600 students. Both districts play at the Delphos Football Stadium. “Stadium Park is a nice facility, and since they share the stadium, there’s a game once or twice a week during football season,” Richardson says.

Homes in town can be hard to come by
The majority of the town’s housing stock features early-to-mid 20th century styles, but there is some variety outside the city center like ranch-style, split-level and New Traditional builds. “A lot of these homes were built in the late 1800s or early 1900s, and a lot of times they’re well maintained,” Richardson says.
The median price of a single-family home in town is about $200,000, which is slightly higher than the Lima median of roughly $180,000. “There’s some new builds close to the high school and some newer houses in the Ricker subdivision, but there’s not a lot of new development,” Richardson says. “Our inventory is pretty low.”

Residents gather and play at Stadium Park
Stadium Park is a hub of activity outside of game day. It’s the city’s main recreational hub with tennis courts, playgrounds and the city swimming pool. “They just upgraded the pool and added a splash zone for kids and a nice slide,” Richardson says. The city has five public parks in total, as well as a walking trail and fishing at Delphos Gillmor Reservoir. The Delphos Country Club has 18 holes of golf open to the public. Locals can catch a concert and live entertainment at Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Van Wert about 15 minutes away.

Locally owned restaurants in Delphos
Local restaurants dominate Delphos, with only a handful of fast-food or chain restaurants. Like many small towns, Delphos is challenged with filling empty storefronts in the historic downtown area. The downtown has seen some new additions in the past few years, including Haehn’s Simply Brewed coffee shop and The Mill, which features a broad menu ranging from sandwiches and pizzas to steaks and seafood. Northwest Ohio is known for its drive-thru convenience stores, and Delphos has several. “You literally drive through and pick up your drinks, your pizza and your food,” Richardson says. “I just assumed it was standard in other places.” The town is also known for two seasonal ice cream stands: The Creamery and Dairy Hut.
In downtown Delphos, The Mill offers delectable food, uncanny ambiance and a great spot for date night for kids of any age.

About 30 minutes to Lima
Delphos is about 20 minutes away from Van Wert and OhioHealth Van Wert Hospital. “You can go anywhere in Lima within 30 minutes,” Richardson says. “We’re also a 45 minute drive from Fort Wayne, so whether we want to go to Fort Wayne or Lima, we’re right in the middle.” The city recently added a bike lane to Fifth Street, the main route through town. Although most folks drive, the Allen County Regional Transit Authority operates a bus route that runs through town five days a week.
