Gothic train stations, deli sandwiches and million-dollar homes on the outskirts of New York City
Established in 1872, the Demarest Railroad Depot still towers today across the street from a local deli. The volunteer fire department is just down the street, and its red doors are decorated with wreaths during the holiday season. In many ways, this small New Jersey borough looks like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting; neighborhood kids gather to sled behind the local high school when it snows, and maple trees in Wakelee Field trees are tapped to make syrup. “Demarest has a balance between the works of man and nature, and nature has played a major role in shaping this town since the start of human settlement,” says Tyler Sellers of 2Win Realty, who was born and raised in Bergen County; the land was originally occupied by branches of the Lenape tribe, and Dutch settlers put down roots in the early 1700s. According to Sellers, “The town prospered in the 19th century with the opening of the railroad and the development of a hotel and racetrack, as well as the building of schools, churches, and various businesses.” Today, it’s mostly occupied by commuters, many of whom live in five-bedroom homes on generous lots. “The Northern Valley is one of the premier areas you can move to if you want to live in the New York suburbs,” assures Sellers. Upper Manhattan is just 15 miles away, although locals know to expect traffic across the George Washington Bridge during rush hour.

Five-bedroom homes exceed $1 million
In Demarest, average home values hover around $1.3 million. Mid-century single-story cottages and brick two-stories, most of which have attached single-car garages and fall under 1,500 square feet, range between $550,000 and $750,000. However, it’s far more common to find houses priced above $1 million and often above $1.5 million. Many of these newer homes are in the traditional style and feature dormer windows, multi-car garages and five bedrooms. Prospective buyers will also find Colonial-Revival architecture and a few luxury estates with backyard swimming pools. For these, prices can fall between $2 million and $5 million. Streets in Demarest are wide and quiet enough to safely jog with headphones in, although most don’t have sidewalks. Pines, Maple and Oak trees offer steady shade, and careful landscaping affords front yard privacy.

Northern Valley’s Institute for Interactive Design Technology
“As someone who’s grown up in Bergen County, Demarest is a premier town; people move there especially if they’re working in New York City with young, school-aged children, as it offers a great school system,” says Sellers. There’s Country Road Elementary for pre-kindergarten through first grade and Luther Lee Emerson Elementary for second, third and fourth grades. The educational review site Niche graded them an A-minus and A, respectively. Demarest Middle received an A, and Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest earned an A-plus. Bergen County Students — including those outside of Demarest’s boundaries — can apply to the Bergen Tech Institute for Interactive Design Technology (IIDT), where they receive instruction in Adobe programs like Photoshop, After Effects and Illustrator. 98% of students in the Northern Valley Regional High School District have college offers upon graduation.

Sandwiches to go at Demarest Deli and big box retail in Closter
Demarest’s small downtown is home to a small handful of restaurants, stores and services. “Demarest is definitely a town built on older infrastructure,” explains Sellers. Across from the 19th-century Gothic train station, there’s the Demarest Deli, which serves up both cold-cut and hot sandwiches to go. It sits between a nail salon and a massage spa on Park Street. There’s also Yasou Mykonos, where residents can order Greek “Island Pies” like Spanakopita and Tiropita. Or grab an iced coffee and a breakfast sandwich from Dunkin’ next door on the way to work. According to Sellers, “For more amenities, you can go over the border to Closter or down to Fort Lee and Paramus.” Find Target, HomeGoods and a Whole Foods in Closter Plaza, for instance. There’s also a Stop & Shop off Demarest Avenue and a Kings Food Market in Cresskill.

Annual celebrations: Demarest Day and Oktoberfest
The Demarest Nature Center is responsible for a regular calendar of events. Residents head out onto the Duck Pond on Canoe Day and meet up to build birdhouses at the Imagination Playground in Wakelee Field. Then there’s Demarest Day, an annual fall festival with carnival face-painting booths, food trucks and live music. The town’s Oktoberfest has been going strong since the 1980s, and crafters set up tents, selling everything from doll clothes to pottery. The public library hosts family storytimes, English as a Second Language conversion groups and adult book clubs, and community members can participate in the town’s annual 5K.
Athletic facilities and gardening at Davies Arboretum & Wildlife Preserve
Baseball teams and soccer teams can practice at Wakelee Field, located off Wakelee Drive. There are also tennis courts and the “Imagination Playground,” where kids meet up on the climbing structures after school. Nearby is the Demarest Swim Club, and neighbors lounge by the pool during the summer months. Find outdoor basketball courts near the middle school, and gather with fellow gardeners at the Davies Arboretum & Wildlife Preserve on Monday mornings to tend to the plants. Golfers can join the Alpine Country Club, which also has a pool and upscale dining room for members. Closter Golf Center offers mini golf nearby.

Cross the George Washington Bridge into Manhattan
According to Sellers, Damerest is particularly attractive to commuters. “It’s got great access to New York City, and it’s a beautiful town with plenty of greenery and trees. All these factors combined allow hustling and bustling New York City workers to come home to a quiet house in a beautiful neighborhood,” he says. Drivers can take the Palisades Interstate Parkway to the George Washington Bridge, which crosses the Hudson River, connects to New York State Route 9A and leads directly into Manhattan. Although public transit isn’t easily accessible from Downtown Damerest (the train station is no longer operational), residents can pick up New Jersey Public Transit buses in Haworth nearby. For cross-country and international travel, head to Newark Liberty International Airport, about 25 miles south along Interstate 95, or La Guardia in Queens. Englewood Health is less than 5 miles from the neighborhood — it offers dozens of services, everything from primary care to emergency services.
