Famous for its flower garden
The historic district of Alamo Placita is located within Denver’s Speer neighborhood, well loved for its “Old Denver” character and iconic namesake park. “Alamo Placita Park is famous for its flower garden,” says Will Torrence, a longtime local and employee at the Denver Public Library. “It runs along Speer Boulevard and Cherry Creek, where you’ll always see people biking and jogging.” Thanks to the community’s proximity to Denver’s downtown scene, Alamo Placita’s residents are rarely more than a few miles from top-notch restaurants, trendy shops and, of course, daily amenities.

The historic properties of Alamo Placita
Alamo Placitas’s eclectic, pre-war style homes were mostly constructed before 1930. Free Classic variations of Queen Annes are the area’s oldest properties, as Victorian designs eventually gave way to modern bungalows and Denver Squares. “Alamo Placita houses a lot of families,” Torrence explains. “So there are plenty of single-family houses – mostly bungalows, actually.” Homes typically feature full- or partial-width porches but vary in their ornamentation and height. With prices between $600,000 and nearly $1 million, homebuyers can expect a range of square footage and property sizes. Condos and townhomes are more commonly priced between $300,000 and $500,000.

W 6th Avenue’s Italian cuisine
With so many dining options to choose from, Alamo Placita residents are hardly pressed to find a solid meal. However, two major Italian restaurants sit on West 6th Avenue. Odyssey offers authentic staples from Sicilian native Chef Ignazio Mulei. For more casual fare, Angelo’s Taverna shucks oysters daily for its seafood bar and pasta dishes. Sarkisian’s is as old as the neighborhood itself – a fine art and antique store with an impressive selection of Oriental rugs and Asian objects d’art. Fans of Trader Joe’s will be happy to know one of the grocery store’s two local locations is nearby. Residents can also find a Safeway on the corner of Corona Street and E 6th Avenue.

A cottonwood grove on Cherry Creek
The neighborhood’s namesake park originated as a cottonwood grove along Cherry Creek. Many of these old-growth trees survive today and have been incorporated into Alamo Placita Park’s design. Each spring, residents and visitors can observe the Italianate Garden’s iconic flower beds in bloom. In addition, a basketball court and playground accompany plenty of open space for picnics and outings. Across East Speer Boulevard and a stretch of Cherry Creek, Hungarian Freedom Park stands in memory of the 1956 Hungarian Uprising, dotted with monuments and sculptures. Families with small children should be attentive to the park’s perimeter streets, as traffic can be unpredictable. Additionally, Denver’s Botanic Gardens are less than a mile north in Cheesman Park and feature themed gardens and concerts throughout the year.
