Athmar Park
Neighborhood in Denver, Colorado
Denver County 80219, 80223

Ranch and bungalow, sometimes with renovations
Homes throughout the neighborhood are mostly ranch or bungalows, although a few Tudor Revivals and new traditional homes can be found as well. Unlike most Denver neighborhoods, Athmar Park has some winding roads in addition to the carefully laid out lots, with most homes built in the 1940s and 50s, although some older 1900 homes can also be found throughout. Most roads also have alley access, with garages scattered along the alleys. Athmar Park has a median price of $484,500 for homes, with most ranch and bungalow homes beginning around $350,000 and reaching $550,000. Some homes have undergone renovations, upping the prices to $650,000. Tudor Revival homes can begin around $520,000 and reach $720,000, while a new traditional home can sell for about $600,000. While many homes have shiplap exteriors, brick is also a common look throughout. Some homes have painted the bricks white to stand out, usually matching interior renovations. Athmar Park receives a crime score of 4 from the CAP Index.Huston Lake with mosaic tables
At Huston Lake Park, the largest park within the neighborhood, residents can walk the mile around the lake with four-legged friends. “You could fit a swimming pool there and still fit everything else,” says Zeller. “You also don’t notice it from any major streets, so it really is a neighborhood park.” Residents can also practice tennis, soccer, baseball or simply enjoy a picnic at one of the three mosaic-covered picnic tables. They commemorate the local neighborhood presbyterian church, one designed by local school children and a view of the mountains from the lake. Clifford Aspgren has the other three mosaic tables, this time with a commemoration of the 1965 South Platte River flood, one about love and a modern design. Aspgren also has a baseball field and sits at the top of a hill. The Johnson-Habitat Park has playgrounds and large structures for children to explore, and is located right next to the South Platte River, as well as the South Platte River Trail. The trail covers 32 miles and stays next to the river.Neighborhood elementary and public charter schools
Children in the neighborhood can attend Goldrick Elementary, which scores a C from Niche, or Valverde Elementary, which scores a C-plus, for kindergarten through fifth grade before attending Grant Beacon Middle, which scores a B, for sixth through eighth grade. Students can then attend Abraham Lincoln High, with a C, and participate in the Advanced Placement program. Students in the Denver area can also attend the KIPP Colorado Public Schools, with KIPP Sunshine Peak Academy, which earns a C-minus, for fifth through eighth graders and KIPP Denver Collegiate High, which earns a B-minus, for ninth through twelfth grade located in the neighborhood.Neighborhood association activities and recreation center
The Athmar Park Neighborhood Association sometimes hosts events throughout the week, such as a run club on Wednesdays and free yoga in the park. Zeller herself has hosted a Halloween-fest in the past, with aims to return this year. The Athmar Recreation Center, about a mile south of the actual neighborhood, has an indoor pool that offers swim lessons and aqua aerobics as well as a ceramics studio and an arcade/game room.Four bus routes and the interstate to the east
There are three bus lines on the borders of the neighborhood and one that goes right through the middle on West Exposition Avenue. A 3-hour pass is $2.75, a day pass is $5.50 and a month pass is $88. Interstate 25, which is a north-south interstate that covers all of Colorado, is just to the east of the neighborhood, across from the South Platte River. Bike lanes were recently installed on some of the roads.Federal Boulevard and local businesses nearby
Residents can shop along Federal Boulevard for Asian cuisine, including Vinh Xuong Bakery and Tony Pho. Grab tacos at Tarascos and then drinks at the Chain Reaction Brewing Company or the Athmar Lounge. “There are a ton of local businesses,” says Zeller. “There are landscapers left and right, tax people, a tattoo place, all the restaurants and a couple pot shops.” The neighborhood is also home to a Costco and a few strip malls.
