Shoveling the snow and sticking around
Athmar Park is only about 6 miles to Downtown Denver, but feels like a true neighborhood. “It’s a family-friendly, diverse, quaint, community united area,” says Jennifer Zeller. “I love my area.” During Colorado snowstorms, volunteers around the neighborhood will shovel walks for the elderly. There will be weekly yoga and runs together, while a walk to pick up a car from the auto shop will result in multiple ride offers and a pit stop at a neighbors house. “I like how everyone sticks around,” says Zeller. “Most people have lived here since the day the building was built.” When someone new moves in, it’s likely due to the proximity of downtown Denver. There are also four Christian churches within the neighborhood.

Huston Lake with mosaic tables
At Huston Lake Park, the largest park within the neighborhood, residents can walk the mile around the lake with four-legged friends. “You could fit a swimming pool there and still fit everything else,” says Zeller. “You also don’t notice it from any major streets, so it really is a neighborhood park.” Residents can also practice tennis, soccer, baseball or simply enjoy a picnic at one of the three mosaic-covered picnic tables. They commemorate the local neighborhood presbyterian church, one designed by local school children and a view of the mountains from the lake. Clifford Aspgren has the other three mosaic tables, this time with a commemoration of the 1965 South Platte River flood, one about love and a modern design. Aspgren also has a baseball field and sits at the top of a hill. The Johnson-Habitat Park has playgrounds and large structures for children to explore, and is located right next to the South Platte River, as well as the South Platte River Trail.
