Denver’s “beautiful dear one”
Belcaro is a residential enclave with deep ties to the history of Denver’s elite. The Italian word for “beautiful dear one,” Belcaro was named after the mansion of US Sen. Lawrence C. Phipps, enticing the city’s wealthiest residents throughout the early 20th century. The Belcaro house, now known as Phipps Mansion, was designed by William Fisher, whose architectural firm designed some of the region’s most famous buildings. Today, Denver’s homeowner’s associations ensure that this legacy remains visible as the city evolves.
The parklike atmosphere of Belcaro
Taking inspiration from Fisher’s historic Georgian Revival landmark mansion, Belcaro’s homes include stately ranchers with roomy yards. Large lots and a robust tree canopy give the area a parklike atmosphere, maintained since the early 1930s. Local subdivisions continue to see development, including the construction of apartments and new builds around Bonnie Brae Park, as well as condominiums like Cherry Creek Towers and the Polo Club high-rise. Land once belonging to Denver’s Polo Club is now a gated community with 24/7 security, a clubhouse and walking trails along ponds and waterfalls. Most homes are priced between $1 million and $3 million.

Although primarily residential, Belcaro is home to a few Denver institutions within and around the Bonnie Brae commercial district. Bonnie Brae Ice Cream is a family-owned creamery that has been open since 1986 and boasts more than 120 flavor combinations. Along the same strip, Campus Lounge has been a neighborhood staple since 1976, offering a beer garden and traditional American favorites. Daily essentials can be purchased at King Soopers in Belcaro Shopping Center, while Whole Foods, Home Depot and World Market are just across South Colorado Boulevard. Additionally, Cherry Creek Shopping Center has more than 160 retail outlets and services.

Historic South Gaylord Street
Half a mile from Bonnie Brae Park, Historic South Gaylord Street is a local landmark loaded with restaurants, shops and annual events. The Firefly Market occurs twice each year, a spring and summer favorite. More than 100 independent artists gather to share their handmade crafts. Similarly, the Kickoff to Summer Memorial Weekend Festival features live music, rides and local vendors. Meanwhile, South Pearl Street in Wash Park is another historic district offering one of the city’s largest farmer’s markets. Oktoberfest and Winterfest are both well-attended, family-friendly events promoting the area’s many small businesses.
Prestigious private school options
Students in Belcaro are districted for Denver Public Schools, though families can browse a variety of local private options, including Graland Country Day School. The kindergarten through eighth-grade institution is in the top 20 percent of Colorado schools, receiving an A-plus on Niche. Public school students can begin at Cory Elementary, with an A-minus on Niche. Merrill Middle earns a B-plus, and South High School is one of four original high schools in Denver, open since 1926. South High receives an A on Niche, offering a Future Center, funded by the Denver Scholarship Foundation, for college preparations.

Lakes and flower gardens in Wash Park
Named after Denver’s French sister city, the City of Brest Park is a hot spot for viewing the Glendale fireworks show on Independence Day. The park’s vast green space has plenty of shady trees, as well as access to Cherry Creek Trail. One of South Denver’s most popular outdoor spots, however, is Washington Park. Flower gardens, fitness amenities and two large lakes– one with a boathouse– allow residents an array of opportunities for recreation. On a smaller scale, Bonnie Brae Park is an oblong meadow in the heart of the Bonnie Brae district, featuring a walking path and picnic areas.
Belcaro is a quaint and peaceful neighborhood full of much to do.
Reaching the downtown scene
Burrowed between Glendale and the Washington Park neighborhood, Belcaro is a mere 5 miles from Denver’s downtown scene via Interstate 25. Additionally, folks can travel south through Centennial or exit onto various perpendicular state highways to reach Aurora to the east, or Lakewood to the west. Highway 2, South Colorado Boulevard, can be difficult to rely on as heavy traffic is common. However, the bustling thoroughfare leads straight north to City Park. Denver’s RTD bus system provides stops along South University Boulevard, South Steele Street and East 1st Avenue. Denver International Airport is about 25 miles north via I-70 and Peña Boulevard.
