Robert W. Speer’s City Beautification movement
One of Denver's earliest and most influential mayors, Robert W. Speer's passion for the City Beautiful movement is still felt in his namesake neighborhood. Often referred to as an “Old Denver” district, historic architecture is found among homes and local institutions. “Speer has a lot of apartments going up, especially along Speer Boulevard,” says Will Torrence, a longtime local and employee at the Denver Public Library. “It’s close to the University of Denver, so there are some college students floating around there. And it’s close to South Pearl Street. There are a number of farmer’s markets in Denver, but the one on South Pearl? That’s definitely the biggest.”

Speer’s balance of contemporary and historic homes
Homes dating back to the turn of the 20th century line the streets of Speer. Residents will undoubtedly stumble upon a Denver Square among Queen Annes and clapboard Dutch Colonial Revivals. Porches and decorative wooden beams are prominent in the area's single-story cottages and Craftsman bungalows, often priced between $400,000 and $700,000 with contemporary builds reaching closer to $1 million. Alternative housing options include luxury condominium buildings, like Country Club Towers, pairing modern amenities with Cherry Creek and Capitol Hill views. Condos range anywhere from $250,000 to $500,000.

Foreign films at Landmark Mayan Theatre
Trendy bars, galleries, boutiques and entertainment venues have decorated South Broadway for decades. Locals can catch the latest foreign and arthouse films at Landmark Mayan Theatre, one of only three surviving Art Deco Mayan Revival cinemas in the country. “The Hornet is a big bar that’s been around forever,” says Torrence. The bar sits across the street from the theater, with checkerboard floors and craft beer. And retro juke joint, Skylark Lounge, has hosted comedy acts and concerts since 1943, suitable for a nightcap. “Skylark is a big hot spot and always has live music,” Torrence continues. As for daily amenities, Speer’s residents will find a Trader Joe’s less than a mile north on Logan Street, as well as a Safeway off E 6th Avenue.

Immersing into the Denver community
Folks looking to branch out can rent a plot at the West Washington Park Community Garden, an addition to Denver’s Urban Gardens project. Speer’s locals and surrounding neighborhoods gather here to plant and harvest from February to October. However, Denver’s wide array of annual events promotes an even greater level of networking. The Mile High City hosts plenty of artistic events, from the Juneteenth Music Festival to the Denver Arts Festival and Five Points Jazz Festival. Restaurant Week, as well as Denver’s Burger Battle and A Taste of Colorado, invite foodies to delight in the many eateries the city has to offer.

Home of the Cedar Falcons
Speer’s students are zoned for Denver Public Schools, beginning at either Steele Elementary, receiving an A-minus from Niche, or Dora Moore School, which enrolls pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and receives a C-plus from Niche. Many of Speer's schools were influenced by the City Beautiful movement, sweeping Denver throughout the early 1900s. To this day, students at Denver School of Science and Technology (DSST): Cedar Middle and High School attend classes within a historic Gothic Revival edifice. Home to the Falcons, both institutions receive an A from Niche, with the latter serving as a charter school.

Historic recreation and green spaces along Cherry Creek
The Denver County Club’s reputation as the oldest on the west side of the Mississippi is only strengthened by its continual evolution, now offering members an 18-hole golf course, an Olympic-size swimming pool, racquet sports and a skating rink. Denver’s Botanic Gardens display vast art exhibitions among the greenery. The venue’s sunken amphitheater regularly hosts a variety of musicians and shows. As for more traditional outdoor recreation, Speer’s residents can find solace at Hungarian Freedom Park, honoring the 1956 Hungarian Uprising. The park’s monuments juxtapose its vibrant green space. And north, across Cherry Creek, Alamo Placita Park was originally a cottonwood grove. Today, many of its original old-growth trees still shade the Italianate Garden.
Art installations and seasonal blooms make Denver Botanic Gardens a local favorite.
