Living in Valverde, Colorado
Valverde is a growing, family-friendly neighborhood just four miles southwest of downtown Denver. Spanish for “green valley,” the name Valverde alludes to the neighborhood’s heritage and history as fertile farmland. Valverde’s proximity to the South Platte River, once a boon for local farmers, had dire consequences when the river flooded in 1965 — damaging hundreds of homes and displacing residents. Because of this, Valverde’s eastern half consists mostly of commercial properties like wholesalers, manufacturers and distribution centers, while its western portion is almost entirely residential. Bill Maher, a Realtor with RE/MAX professionals who has sold homes in the area for over 25 years, recommends the neighborhood for its "Central location close to Interstate 25 and the Platte River Trail as well as many local restaurants and shops." Despite offering comfortable lawns and driveways, homes here are also "Much more affordable than those on the east side of the river," says Maher, making it a "great place to buy a home, especially considering the city has plans to invest in more infrastructure and amenities for the area." With an easy commute into the city, public schools and parks within walking distance and relatively affordable homes, residents of Valverde enjoy living a laid-back lifestyle just outside Colorado's biggest city.

Affordable mid-century homes in southwest Denver
While walking along Valverde's smooth sidewalks and peaceful neighborhood streets, residents might notice how homes here often have lots of space for yards and driveways and, shaded by the leafy canopies of mature trees, the wide streets accommodate ample room for additional street parking. Most houses in Valverde are single-family homes built either in the early 1900s, when Valverde began as an incorporated town, or the 1950s when the City of Denver heavily developed the area during its post-war housing shortage. With an average sales price of about $420,000, homes in the neighborhood are about $250,000 dollars less than the average for the Denver area and range from two-bedroom cottage, traditional and ranch-style homes selling for as low as $330,000 dollars to larger, three and four-bedroom bungalow-style homes selling up to about $500,000 dollars and featuring original mid-century construction.

Shopping and dining on Alameda Avenue
For shopping and dining, residents of Valverde are fortunate to have a range of different flavors and cultural cuisines within walking or biking distance. "Right along Alameda Avenue, there are some real neat, hidden spots that locals love," says Maher. Residents can stop by small businesses like La Calle Taqueria y Carnitas to try some authentic Mexican street food with bold flavors from the Yucatán to Mexico City and classic drinks like horchata and tepache, a fermented pineapple juice. For casual Vietnamese fare, residents can peruse the pastries at Vinh Xuong Bakery, or sit down at their cafe with a freshly made banh mi sandwich and a cup of rich and flavorful Vietnamese coffee. After eating, residents can also pick up some groceries at their local international grocery store, the Great Wall Supermarket, or Costco, which is right across the way. For some classic Colorado craft beer, Burns Family Artisan Ales is a brewery in the neighborhood that produces libations for any occasion. The local brewery regularly celebrates major holidays with specialty concoctions, pairing menus and live entertainment.

Valverde’s pocket parks have been local gathering sites for decades. From hosting potlucks to political organizing, these impromptu meetings still characterize the neighborhood and community get-togethers can still be found at the neighborhood's local parks within walking distance from many homes. Bar Val Wood Park is one local pocket park where families can take their kids to play on the playground, friends can gather to play games on the sports fields and basketball courts while dogs play fetch in the open green space. Residents can also walk or bike along the South Platte River Trail, which is accessible right by Valverde Park and travels along the river all the way through Bear Creek Park to the Red Rocks Amphitheater at the base of the foothills in Morrison. For something different, The Denver Bouldering Club Central offers climbers of all skill levels more than 11,000 square feet of free climbing and 3D physical puzzles.
