Morrison Road Corridor and Federal Boulevard: Art, eateries and more
A kaleidoscope of colorful local Mexican restaurants, vibrant murals and urban gardens make up Morrison Road, the main commercial road that slices diagonally through Westwood's center. Even the trash cans here are decorated with vivid patterns. A popular spot along the road is Kahlo's Restaurant, a cozy eatery decorated with Frida Kahlo portraits and papel picado, colorful Mexican paper decorations. Patrons here often recommend huaraches and enchiladas; fried ice cream and buttery churros are popular dessert options. Some of the road's other local shops include Gonzalez Tires and the shoe store Marina's Miscellanea. To the neighborhood's eastern border is Little Saigon, an enclave featuring authentic Vietnamese eateries and local shops that line Federal Boulevard. The New Saigon Restaurant is popular for its hot pot options. For groceries, people here check out one of the boulevard's smaller shops, like Super Carniceria La Hacienda, or head just around 1 mile south of Westwood to King Soopers.
Westwood Chile Fest, Lunar New Year Celebration and more events
Every September, community members gather along Morrison Road for the Westwood Chile Fest. From live music to a signature chili-roasting booth, this event has become a way for locals to get together and celebrate Westwood’s rich culture. Festivalgoers compete in a chili-eating contest and enjoy salsa-tasting opportunities. Folklorico dancers fill the main stage with vibrant colors and festive moves, and the Native American Drum Group, among other local performers, fill the space with music. Hencho en Westwood has been a driving force for many of the other cultural events in the neighborhood, including the annual La Noche de Frida, a community fundraising dinner highlighting local women in the community. Dinner guests feast on moles crafted by local female chefs while enjoying live music. In Little Saigon, events like the Lunar New Year Celebration bring community members together to celebrate the new year with everything from dragon ice carving to dances. In 2023, locals explored the inaugural Saigon Azteca Night Market to enjoy the combination of Latin and Asian cuisine.Bungalows and ranch-style dwellings undergoing renovation
Modest bungalows and ranch-style dwellings line the residential pockets of Westwood. These properties were mainly built anywhere from the 1930s to the ‘60s. Many of them have been recently renovated or torn down to make way for new builds. Prices range from upwards of $200,000 for a home in need of renovation to about $640,000 for a new construction. This neighborhood features colorful facades and some of the smaller houses in Denver, as the median single-family home size is around 1,100 square feet. Properties sit on small, often fenced-in lots, and many residents take advantage of xeriscaping, a low-water option that uses plants adaptable to the state’s semi-arid climate. Some residents do not have garages or driveways, so they park on the streets, but those who do can make some extra money. “Denver allows ADU development on most lots here,” says Garrett Dinnel, a Realtor on the Bring Home Denver team at Keller Williams who has sold properties in the area. “Apartment garages and casitas are allowed on most lots, which also appeals to multigenerational living.” Most people here rent their properties.Increasing green space in the community and the Denver Indian Center
Historically, residents here have not had access to many green spaces, but the Westwood Via Verde project is trying to change that. The organization is working to increase bikeways, parks and art in the community. Artists paint vibrant murals on the ground of intersections, often implementing the community’s rich culture as inspiration. This artistic park movement is evident in the award-winning Cuatro Vientros (Four Winds) Park. Kids enjoy playing in the interactive water space, and skaters practice their tricks at the skate spot. Across the neighborhood, the newly renovated Westwood Park features a large open field flanked by playsets and a basketball court. For a waterfront outside space, many head down to Garfield Lake Park to spend the day fishing or walking around the water. Along Morrison Road is the Denver Indian Center (DICI), a gathering place for American Indians and Alaska Natives in Denver. DICI supports the Native American community through its programs like language and culture classes and career services.
RDT, Denver Health and the commute to downtown Denver
Locals here often drive to get around, but they can also take advantage of RDT Denver's public bus options. Many residents here will work at one of the neighborhood’s establishments, but they are also near major employers like Denver Health, which is just around 4 miles away. Some locals work in downtown Denver, which is just 5 miles away. For higher learning opportunities, they’ll be less than 6 miles away from the Metropolitan State University of Denver and the University of Denver. Travelers can head around 30 miles east via Interstate 70 to get to the Denver International Airport (DEN).Denver Public School District
Students can enroll in the Denver Public School District, which has over 85,000 students. They can attend Knapp Elementary, a Transitional Native Language Instruction (TNLI) school that offers its students at least 45 minutes of instruction per day focused on English language development. They can then move on to Kepner Beacon Middle and can finish their educational journey at John F. Kennedy High, which features bilingual Spanish and English instruction for classes like biology. Students at the high school can enroll in career pathway programs, including engineering. All three schools received C-minus ratings or higher from Niche, and with the district’s SchoolChoice program, students can also apply to other schools outside of their neighborhood.
