Accent
Suburban Neighborhood in Des Moines, Iowa
Polk County 50317
Maintained midcentury architecture
Slowly developed over several generations, the area's architectural aesthetic doesn't tend to follow any one style or era in particular. Cape Cods, bungalows, Colonial and American Foursquare are all represented, though the majority tend toward ranch-style designs. At an average of 1,000 square feet, homes tend to be smaller than the national average of 1,900. Lawns match this trend, averaging at just under 0.16 of an acre: less than a third of the national average. However, homes make up for this with an average sale price of $175,000, well below the national average of $540,000. "In Accent, the housing stock is pretty diverse with many types of homes developed at different times; you'll find homes that date over 100 years old to current homes that are new construction," says Snover. "Most people who grew up in the area tend to stay here, so there are many generational, long-term residents, and the housing market stays stable." Prices begin in the low $60,000s for smaller homes beneath 1000 square feet and rise into the mid-$100,000s for modest, ranch-style houses. Renovated historic and midcentury homes peak in the high $200,000s.Disc golf at Grandview Park
Founded in the late 19th century, Grandview Park is a hub for residents of northeastern Des Moines. The grounds are equipped with playground equipment, basketball and tennis courts, a spray ground, a disc golf court and nature trails that wind through all 60 acres of the park's natural beauty. Just next door is the Bright Grandview Golf Course, a public 18-hole course founded in 1902. Easttown Park is a particularly popular spot when the weather warms up, featuring two baseball diamonds and the Teachout Aquatic Center's two waterslides. Located just south of Accent's southern border, the Iowa State Fairgrounds hosts some of the biggest events in the state. With its enormous facilities, everything from rodeos to flea markets are held here, not to mention the Iowa State Fair itself.Extracurriculars at Goodrell Middle
Iowa's open enrollment policy allows students to attend any school that suits them best, regardless of district. Students can begin their education at Phillips Elementary School in neighboring Fairmont Park, with a C on Niche. From there, they can attend Goodrell Middle School, which has a C-minus and looks to its student body when it comes to planning after-school activities. "We have a slew of clubs and extracurriculars based on the students' interests," says Carrie Romo, principal of Goodrell Middle School and Des Moines educator since 2013. "Those opportunities change yearly: it's about what the students want to participate in." Finally, older kids can enroll at East High School, which has a C. Established in 1861, East High School has a long and storied history with the Des Moines community, culminating in a robust academic program, championship-winning athletics department and award-winning theatrical productions.Festivals at Iowa State Fairgrounds
Attracting over 1 million visitors every year, the Iowa State Fair is the biggest festival in Iowa. Taking place at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, the 11-day celebration features carnival rides, Grandstand concerts, truck and tractor pull competitions, an art center and food and beer from over 90 local vendors. In addition, the Iowa State Fairgrounds also serves as a campsite and a venue for local livestock shows and exhibits. The Accent Neighborhood Association is actively involved with the local community. It hosts regular events dedicated to civic pride and getting to know the neighbors, including flower plantings, sporting events and holiday-themed parties.Easy access to Des Moines International Airport
Downtown is 4 miles to the west, while the Des Moines International Airport is 10 miles southwest. The city's Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) bus line runs all over the city and will take commuters anywhere from Waterbury to Sheridan Gardens at $1.75 a fare.Thin crust at Bianchi's
Known for its daily specials and homemade thin-crust pizza, Bianchi's Hilltop has been a family-owned local institution since 1950. If the crowd is too big, carryout and delivery are also available. Café Con Leche is a Mexican-inspired café that offers specialty drinks and baked goods along with a full menu that includes street tacos, Cuban sandwiches and breakfast nachos. Locals can drive down University Avenue to find clusters of restaurants, retail and grocery stores, including Aldi, Walgreens and more.
