Peaceful summer nights
Even with a large population and thriving city landscape, the Des Moines urban center quickly gives way to wide open spaces heading east of downtown. Chesterfield sits within this transitional space, a semi-urban enclave of modest homes, industrial parks and undeveloped land on the northern banks of the Des Moines River. The neighborhood is a 10-minute drive from the bustle of downtown, yet the only audible sounds on warm summer nights are the chirping of crickets and the quiet voices of residents taking their evening strolls.
Mature trees provide shade and beauty along Chesterfield’s quiet streets.
Chesterfield offers easy access to ponds and lakes for peaceful strolls or fishing trips.

Homes go quickly
"This is more of an entry-level community if housing is available," says Shane Torres, broker/owner with RE/MAX Concepts, who has been representing the area for 15 years. "People tend to stay put in Chesterfield, so when a house comes on the market, it's swooped up by flippers." Chesterfield is a quiet neighborhood that has wide tree-lined streets with sidewalks. Bungalow homes are the most common architectural type, followed closely by ranch-style and split-level. Lots are less than ¼ acre, suitable for a small garden, and homes without garages have driveway parking or a carport available. Home prices range between $62,000 and $257,000.

Classic Italian and zombie burgers
There are several dining, retail and entertainment options close by. Aldi is a 2-mile drive via 30th Street, and La Tapatia Grocery sells hard-to-find international options. As for dining, Torres says his favorite is The Latin King Italian Dining, a local staple since 1947, known for its classic Italian menu and an extensive wine list in a country villa-like setting. "The most popular dish on the menu is our Chicken Spiedini," says Chef Zach Boals, who's been with the restaurant for a year. "I try to get out of the kitchen every day to meet the customers. Everyone is warm and friendly." The restaurant scene in nearby East Village is eclectic, with options ranging from breakfast classics at Railroad Bill's Dining Car to the counter service at Zombie Burger, a modern burger joint with a horror-themed interior design.
