On rainy days, residents can rent a spot at Bowlerama Lanes or drive into Downtown Des Moines to visit a museum.

The community skims the edges of suburban and rural Iowa, a location reflected in the neighborhood's streetscapes and architectural makeup. "Homes here were built between 1990 and 2010," Levering says. "There are some parts of the neighborhood that are still seeing new construction." Ranch-style and two-story traditional are the most common architectural designs. Plots are typically 1/8 to 1/4 acre, and most homes have either attached or detached garages. Prices range between $195,000 and $315,000.

High school offers AP classes
Ewing Woods-Evergreen community is served by the Des Moines Independent Community School District and the Carlyle Community School District, both of which offer open enrollment but do not provide transportation to students coming from outside of the district. Jackson Elementary and Weeks Middle School are walkable from many neighborhood homes and earn a C and C-minus from Niche, respectively. East High School has a C. The school has a rich history, having continuously operated since 1861 and in the same building since 1911 when the student marched alongside a caravan of trucks and horse-drawn wagons transporting the furniture. Ever since, the school has commemorated the event with Class Day, an annual gathering of alumni and current students, which includes a banquet and awarding of scholarships.
