The cultural crossroads of Des Moines
There’s an intriguing mix of cultures in the Mondamin Presidential neighborhood of Des Moines. Its immediate proximity to Drake University’s campus gives the community the sense of being a college town, but Mondamin Presidential is a mostly residential enclave. The tree-lined streets are not as densely packed as one might expect from a city neighborhood, yet Mondamin Presidential is just over 2 miles from downtown Des Moines. “It’s a walkable neighborhood with lots of mature trees,” says Realtor Pennie Carroll of Pennie Carrol & Associates Real Estate. “It’s close to Drake and Interstate 235. It’s a very desirable area.” With wide-open swaths of green space to its north, the vibrant electricity of Drake University to its west and the bustle of downtown to its south, Mondamin Presidential is a Des Moines neighborhood like no other.

The effects of the mid-century housing boom
One extra inspection that is often recommended to homebuyers in Mondamin Presidential is a sewer line scope. “A lot of the houses were built with Orangeburg pipe for the sewage back in the 1940s and ‘50s,” Carroll says. “It tends to deteriorate, so we always recommend a sewer scope.” This extra step is a helpful money-saver should problems arise down the line. Regardless, Mondamin Presidential remains a desirable area for young professionals looking to own at the conflux of Des Moines’ distinctive communities.
