Pioneer Park features late 20th century ranch styles
Sidewalks line the roads and cul-de-sacs of this residential neighborhood. Single-family properties built in the late 20th century sit on manicured, grassy lawns, sometimes accented with tall trees. Ranch-style homes are common, as are split-levels, split-foyers and three and four-bedroom bilevels. “It’s a very affordable area,” Tran says. Prices typically fall between $175,000 and $250,000, although for $150,000, homebuyers can find a two-bedroom duplex in a ranch style or bilevel house.Evergreen Park offers several ways to get active
Pioneer Park, from which the neighborhood gets its name, sits at the top of the neighborhood. Families can pack a picnic and let their kids run around the playground and open fields. Evergreen Park offers many opportunities to get active, from basketball courts to exercise equipment. It also features Ta Kraw courts, where people can play sepak takraw, a sport similar to volleyball. Besides having eight baseball diamonds, the James W. Cownie Baseball Park gives locals easy access to the Carl Voss Trail, a walking path that takes them the 3 and a half miles into Downtown Des Moines. From there, they can visit museums in the city, such as the Science Center of Iowa and the Des Moines Arts Center.East High is birthplace of Sisters 4 Success
Pioneer Park is inside the Des Moines Independent Community School District, also known as Des Moines Public Schools. Students can start at Mary Jackson Elementary School, which receives a C from Niche and serves free breakfast and lunch. Nathan Weeks Middle School is rated C-minus. East High School, which earns a C, is the birthplace of Sisters 4 Success, a program designed to build confidence in Black girls through mentorship from female leaders of color. Since it started in 2002, chapters have opened across the district, and a similar program for men, Brother 2 Brother, was created in 2009.Pioneer Park residents attend Downtown Des Moines events
Downtown Des Moines hosts several events throughout the year, from Out to Lunch, a summer celebration with live music, food trucks and vendors, to cultural festivals, including the CelebrAsian festival, which showcases food and entertainment from the Asian cultures that live in Iowa. “I actively participated when I lived there,” Tran says. The neighborhood is also about 5 miles from the Iowa State Fair, the largest annual event in the state, and features music, rides and food.U.S. Route 69 borders Pioneer Park
The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) has several bus stops along East Park Avenue and Evergreen Avenue. U.S. Route 69 runs along the side of the neighborhood, giving residents access to downtown. U.S. Route 69 connects with Interstate 235 once it hits the city, taking drivers to major Midwest cities, such as Omaha, Nebraska, about 140 miles away. The Des Moines International Airport is about 5 and a half miles away and partners with six airlines to offer direct flights across the country and connections to international destinations.Shopping and dining options along U.S. Route 69
Residents do most of their grocery shopping at Hy-Vee in the Southgate Shopping Center at the bottom of the neighborhood. While there, they can get dinner at Señor Tequila Mexican Cuisine & Tequila Bar, which serves homestyle Mexican food and offers nearly 50 tequilas for specialty margaritas. More shopping and dining options, including Buffalo Wild Wings and other fast and casual restaurants, can be found along U.S. Route 69. People can also drive downtown and try one of the many restaurants and cafes, including St. Kilda Cafe & Bakery, which features an Australian-style breakfast and lunch menu. Walmart and Home Depot are about 3 miles away, while Target is about a 4-mile drive.Pioneer Park storm preparedness
The greater Des Moines area, including Pioneer Park, is at a higher risk during severe weather than the surrounding counties, especially during tornados and strong winds, because it has less natural resistance to wind. Residents should prepare by identifying safe zones in their homes and ensuring they have a stocked emergency kit. The Iowa Methodist Medical Center is about 4 miles away and is one of two Level I Trauma Centers in the state.
