Combining modern amenities with old-fashioned vibes
In a world attempting to make all old things new, Salisbury Oaks intends to keep the same old-fashioned atmosphere maintained since the mid-19th century. “So much of Des Moines is getting built up lately,” says Angel Erickson, president of the Salisbury Oaks Neighborhood Association. “It’s nice to live in an area that’s established and unique all on its own.” For many, that uniqueness comes down to the neighborhood’s beautifully maintained homes and appreciation for a steady, peaceful existence surrounded by the natural beauty of mature oak trees and the gentle current of the Raccoon River. This has attracted many families and retirees in recent years, adding “family-friendly” to the community’s ever-growing list of perks and attributes.

Historic homes in peaceful greenery
A combination of expertly maintained historic homes and canopies of greenery give sections of the neighborhood a storybook feel, while more open sections of the area are decidedly Norman Rockwell, with long stretches of sidewalks and streets passing picturesque homes on carefully manicured lawns. “It’s a classic American neighborhood,” says Erickson. “There are no cookie-cutter homes here. No two houses in this area look alike.” Though examples of more modern construction exist, Salisbury Oaks’ reputation comes from its turn of the 20th-century homes, which have no issue standing out among neighboring ranch styles. “The area has beautiful generational Tudor Revival, Victorian and Colonial Revival houses,” says Jarod Snover, a Realtor at Iowa Realty Mills Crossing who’s served the area for over five years. “There are also newer homes built within the last 40 years located sporadically throughout the area.” Prices range from the low $300,000s for fixer-uppers and starter homes to the high $400,000s for more modern construction. Larger homes with lawns and amenities to match reach into the high $600,000s.
Tudor homes with surrounding gardens can be found scattered throughout Salisbury Oaks.

Study Japanese at Roosevelt High
Young students can begin their education at Greenwood Elementary, which has a C-plus on Niche and boasts the area’s oldest school building. From there, they can attend Callanan Middle School, which has a C-minus, before enrolling in B-rated Roosevelt High School, which offers students the opportunity to study subjects as varied as marine biology and Japanese. Iowa’s open enrollment policy allows parents to choose the right public school for their children, regardless of district. However, locals tend to admire their school system wherever they end up. “Our alumni take great pride in their children and grandchildren going to Des Moines public schools. There are just so many opportunities here,” says Donna Adcock, who’s been the executive secretary at Roosevelt High School for almost 30 years. “If you’re bored, you’re not doing it right.”

With 11 acres of gardens and woodland, the estate features details crafted from 16th-century English oak and numerous antiques and works of art. At over 80 acres, Greenwood Park is one of the largest public parks in Des Moines. Locals visit it in the warmer months to take advantage of its spray park, tennis courts and scenic rose gardens. During the winter, residents are fond of sledding on the park’s gentle slopes or ice skating on its frozen pond.

Smash burgers at Lachele's
Lachele’s Fine Foods offers specialty smash burgers, tots and cocktails with a laid-back, uber-hip atmosphere. Service is fast, but the location is small so smaller parties might be more comfortable. Inspired by Southeast Asian flavors, Crème serves cupcakes, milk bread and other sweet treats; they even make custom wedding cakes. Every Friday and Saturday, this modern bakery serves up cake and cocktails until midnight as part of their Midnight Munchies celebration. All ages are welcome, but it’s first come, first served. For shopping trips, residents from all over Des Moines visit the shopping corridor between Ingersoll Avenue and Grand Avenue. Known simply as “The Avenues,” this series of local shops and services includes everything from trendy coffee shops to artisanal groceries to midwifery care.
