In the family-friendly community of Plymouth-Detroit, residents enjoy the excitement of a hip and happening downtown full of shops and restaurants and the calm and quiet of the residential areas once they wrap up the day at home. As the neighborhood grows, so does the sense of community, making the area proud to be someone’s home.
“Detroit is slowly rebuilding itself back into the booming city it once was,” says Harrison R. Duke, Detroit native, current resident of the Grandmont neighborhood of the city and regional historian. “A lot of the local communities are collaborating to work towards a marketing campaign to get the population boosted again.”
In bustling downtown, locals are busy tending to their daily errands. Pedestrians walk from shop to shop, stopping in stores like Sun & Snow, while cars focus on their commute to get where they’re going. Conveniently located off the I-96 Express, residents have easy access to the surrounding metro Detroit area. The residential streets of the community are filled with a variety of different home styles, providing an overall eclectic look to the community. Ranch-style homes don brick façades and sit on large lots that are ideal for outdoor entertaining during warmer times of the year. Colonial-style homes offer a classic vibe, with tree-dotted, well-manicured lawns and shuttered windows. Stately Victorian homes are accented with brick stairways leading to small stoops and spacious side porches, and enormous farmhouse-style homes feature fenced-in yards and wrap-around porches. Prices in the area are a bit lower than usual, ranging from below $100,000 to the high $200,000s. More spacious homes can reach the $400,000s.
As part of the Detroit Public Schools Community School District, students can attend Bates Academy through grade eight before enrolling in Cass Technical High School. A top producer of notable alums, Cass Technical High School, counts recording artist J. Moss, actress and former Miss USA Kenya Moore and Hollywood legend Lily Tomlin among its famous graduates. Cass Tech holds an overall Niche grade of B-plus, while Bates Academy holds a B-minus.
“Detroit has a history of park spaces that allow residents the chance the socialize,” says Duke. “A lot have been revamped and upgraded, and there’s an emphasis on the need for all kinds of recreational spaces.” As its name suggests, Greene Park provides lush green space for outdoor activities during the spring and summer and glistens with snow during the winter. In addition to the vast open space, the park also features a playground for children to enjoy and basketball courts for quick pickup games. For indoor activities, Detroit Roller Wheels is a local skating rink that hosts weekly themed nights that are fun for the whole family.
Nearby, Grand Price Foodland is a convenient spot to grab groceries and other daily essentials, and the Dearborn Meat Market is close by for fresh cuts of meat and cold cuts. Starter’s Bar & Grill is a Detroit staple, featuring a menu filled with feel-good dishes like fish and chips, pizza and pasta and burgers and sandwiches. At Manhattan Fish & Chicken, dinner combos to feed the entire family fill the menu with a variety of options that include whole wings, catfish nuggets and jumbo shrimp.
