The small community of Ravendale on Detroit’s east side has seen hard times, but local leaders are committed to restoring the neighborhood’s charm. “We call it the rebirth of Ravendale. We’re working with the city, a local church and police officers to get it back to where it used to be,” says Toni Berni, president of Ravendale Community, Inc. “I tell people if they want to move into a community and work from the ground up, Ravendale is the place to be. The residents are excited about the rebirth of it.” The neighborhood association has partnered with an organization called Detroit Friends and Family, which receives $175,000 each quarter for violence reduction programs and can receive more money based on the program’s success. Berni hopes this program will help make Ravendale a neighborhood people can be proud of.

Bungalows and Tudors are popular home styles
Many homes in Ravendale are brick bungalows or Tudor-inspired cottages with steep-pitched roofs. Houses often have a small front step, but some have larger porches where residents often set up rocking chairs. There are a few larger Colonial Revival homes in the neighborhood as well. Most houses have driveways, but garages are rare. Sidewalks line the community streets, providing walkability through the area. A few roads in the neighborhood are lined with mature trees on either side, adding plenty of shade and natural beauty. Most of the community has an urban feel, with homes built close together, but some blocks have more vacant lots. Homes in Ravendale can cost anywhere between $15,000 and $90,000.

I-94 access and helicopter tours
Convenient access to Interstate 94 south of the neighborhood makes it easy for residents to get downtown or head to areas north of Detroit. Harper Avenue and Conner Street each connect to Gratiot Avenue, which gives locals a 7.5-mile drive straight into downtown. There are bus stops along Harper Avenue to the south and Conner Street to the west. Coleman A. Young International Airport is nearby as well. It has no commercial service but is home to helicopter tours and Davis Aerospace Technical High School.

K-8 at Duke Ellington Conservatory of Music & Art
Edward “Duke” Ellington Conservatory of Music & Art at Beckham Academy serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. It earns a C-minus on Niche. The Ellington Conservator of Music & Art features a well-rounded academic achievement and fine arts education curriculum. Students from the school’s jazz band have represented the school district at the Detroit Jazz Festival for five years in a row. Also earning a C-minus, Denby High is home to approximately 575 students with a student-teacher ratio of 17-to-1. The school has shown improvement in recent years, with its graduation rate increasing by 16.2% during the 2021-22 school year. Students can explore various interests through robotics, music and business elective courses.

When it comes to dining, Berni says there are good options nearby. “There’s a breakfast restaurant — Detroit Breakfast — on Conner Street. That’s really well attended by the community,” she says. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week and serves waffles, eggs, grits and other classic diner food. Residents can also dine at New Harper Seafood, a small local restaurant serving fried fish and shrimp. There's a Save A Lot on Conner Street 2 miles south of the neighborhood. Farmer John Food Center is a family-owned store 1.5 miles west of the community, offering a full-service supermarket and everyday household items.

Detroit Lions, other downtown events within 8 miles
With downtown Detroit and Ford Field less than 8 miles away, Ravendale residents aren’t far from Detroit Lions football games and tailgating.
