A historically working-class Detroit enclave
Detroit’s Von Steuben community derives its name from the American Revolutionary War hero Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, a German immigrant officer in the Continental Army whose training of George Washington’s army played a significant role in achieving American independence. This name perhaps also alludes to Detroit’s popularity as a destination for German immigrant laborers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as this industrial town transformed into the rip-roaring “Motor City” whose automobile industry helped define “the American Century.” The understated historical origins of the Von Steuben community are still visible in its street names, among them Hamburg, Strasburg, Dresden, Sauer, and Greiner. Today, the neighborhood holds a variety of home styles, a handful of local restaurants and a small collection of parks.
Von Steuben can be found just 10 miles Northeast of Downtown Detroit.

Tudor and ranch-style homes bedecked in brick
Equally evocative of the Old World is this neighborhood’s abundance of brick Tudor-style homes, many of which were built in the 1940s. Sitting alongside equally vintage bungalows and ranch-style homes, these homes were primarily built in brick to withstand cold Midwestern winters. Ryan Lally, Realtor with KW Grosse Pointe, says the neighborhood presents an opportunity for buyers. “Where else in the United States can you find a well-built, brick ranch-style home on a corner lot for $50,000, less than the average national salary in the US for 2023?” Homes in Von Steuben sell for between $20,000 and $135,000, offering homebuyers a welcome range of prices and lifestyles. The median home price is $51,500, up 8% from the previous year. Lally says the combination of a refurbished vintage housing stock and below-average housing prices presents great opportunities for this community’s growth. “With some original charm and character still intact, these properties have the opportunity to add value and turn houses into homes.”
