Warrendale is a suburban community in Detroit's far west side. The area is one of the city’s largest neighborhoods and will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2025. Warrendale has a powerful sense of community, with many residents living in the region for generations and many businesses serving the area for decades. Homes in the area are often smaller and older with plenty of yard space, each connected by sidewalks that offer quick access to popular local parks and nearby schools. Warrendale is also bordered by revitalized shopping districts and offers quick access to both Dearborn and downtown Detroit, making it a great “middle-ground neighborhood,” says Barb Matney, the Warrendale Community Organization President for over 8 years.

Older renovated Detroit ranches
Among the tree-lined streets and sidewalks connecting residencies, architectural styles are comprised mostly of ranch, brick and bungalow-style homes built between the 1920s and 1960s. Prices can range from $30,000 to $135,000, depending on whether the homes are in need of repairs or have already been renovated. Each home in Warrendale is matched with a sizable plot of land, which often includes a driveway and plenty of street parking.

Main roads and improved walkability
The neighborhood is bordered by Ford Road and Southfield Freeway, two main thoroughfares in the area that make commutes to downtown Detroit a simple feat for residents. For walking and biking, “You used to never see people on the streets,” Matney says. “But now you can see people riding their bikes or walking through the park.” The area’s walkability is largely due to Project Greenlight, a public-private-community partnership that combines real-time crime fighting and community policing to help improve public safety. Usually just for businesses, the park and garden are “the only community spaces part of Project Greenlight,” Matney says. The Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is only 14 miles to the south for trips outside of the city. For medical care, Garden City Hospital is 5 miles to the west and offers services such as senior care, radiology and imaging.
Detroit grills and nightlife
For dining out, the northern and southern ends of the neighborhood offer plenty of spots to eat. Ford Patio Bar & Grill is a popular casual spot with an extensive menu, from chips and salsa to 12-oz ribeyes. The nightlife in Warrendale is something locals want to take advantage of, with many choosing to grab a drink at Hurry Inn Sports Bar, a well-established community member since 1919. For themed karaoke nights, Adam’s Apple Bar is always around for late-night ventures. Walmart Supercenter is right across Southfield Freeway for easy access to shopping and groceries.

Minock-Whitlock Park
Minock-Whitlock Park is located directly in the heart of the neighborhood and is a space where kids play and families enjoy a peaceful afternoon. It was created by the In Memory of Community Garden in 2019 as “there was a need for a park in the area,” Matney says. It is a privately owned park, protected by Project Greenlight, that has quickly become an important part of the community, often hosting events with the garden throughout the year. Ryan Park is in the southern end of the neighborhood and offers residents a space to play a game of soccer or have a picnic. Rouge Park is less than a mile from most homes and hosts events for community members of all ages. The Rouge Park Winter Fest is in its 2nd year and guests in attendance can enjoy skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, food and other activities.

Detroit Public Schools Community District
Students in the area are served by the Detroit Public Schools Community District and can start their education at Carver STEM Academy from prekindergarten to eighth grade. Students then finish their education at Cody High School, which offers a co-educational environment and a college preparatory curriculum with a focus on three industry certification programs: Health Science, Information Technology and App Development and Public Safety. Both schools receive a C-minus rating from Niche.

In Memory of Community Garden and Orchard
The most notable pillar of the community is the In Memory of Community Garden and Orchard, a non-profit in the neighborhood. Beginning as a revitalization project, the garden has quickly gained traction, doubled in size, and allowed “the neighborhood to come to life,” Matney says. The garden is a space where residents have access to fresh produce in exchange for volunteer hours. The garden also sells products for discounted prices and now has two orchards. Locals can explore the garden and find fresh fruit such as apricots, cherries and plums. It also features a greenhouse and butterfly garden. As well as produce, the organization provides food distribution every Saturday and hosts events such as Paint in The Garden and Light Up the Night on Halloween.

The police in my area and very responsive when called. I will occasionally see police cars driving around just checking on the neighborhood. They are friendly and get involved with the people of the community.

I love how my location is easily accessible to stores and restaurants. My street is a very quiet, calm, beautiful. We take great pride in our yards and home. My neighbors are friendly and always offer to lend a helping hand. It's a family and children oriented neighborhood.
