Like many neighborhoods of Detroit, Yorkshire Woods has faced particular challenges but still remains loved by its community members. The neighborhood has endured problems with crime and many of its homes need repairs, but Karen Gracey, secretary for the Yorkshire Woods Community Association, says the community has grown more peaceful in recent years and homes are slowly being restored. “It’s a quiet neighborhood,” Gracey says. "For the most part, homeowners here care for the neighborhood."
Yorkshire Woods is highly regarded for its selection of affordable homes.

Brick homes of differing styles
Many homes in Yorkshire Woods date back to the 1920s and need structural repairs, but neighborhood homeowners have maintained their homes well, despite limited resources. Gracey says that many residents are older adults who live on a fixed income. “People coming in are working on their homes and taking care of their properties.”
Deep, red brick tones color the streets of Yorkshire Woods. Though home styles vary from cottages to Colonial Revivals and ranch-style homes, the most common feature is a brick façade with stone or siding accents. Lots are mostly quarter-of-an-acre, and mature oak and willow trees occasionally shade the front yards of homes throughout Yorkshire Woods. Homes needing significant work can sell between $27,000 and $50,000, while well-maintained or fully updated homes can sell between $50,000 and $150,000. Rising six percent from the previous year, the median home price is $57,500.
There are a variety of home sizes and styles for every budget found throughout Yorkshire Woods.

Local restaurants and large grocery chains within reach
Morang Avenue mostly holds corner stores like Holiday House Liquor and Lucky Seven, but the avenue is also home to Grace Food Market, where residents can pick up fresh produce and seafood. Happy’s Pizza is also located on Morang; and Whittier Avenue holds one of the neighborhood's top-rated restaurants. “We have a really nice soul food restaurant,” Gracey says. “Soul 2 Go. They’ve been here a few years now.” Crossing Interstate 94, residents can get a burger at chains like White Castle or Checkers and get their groceries at Kroger or Trader Joe’s on Kercheval Avenue.
Soul 2 Go is your go-to for fresh barbecue.

Movie nights and Harvest Fest
“We have monthly association meetings when the weather is nice,” Gracey says. “Most of our members are older, though, so we just have Zoom meetings when the weather’s bad.” The organization also hosts spring meet-and-greets for neighbors, movie nights and Harvest Fest, an annual harvesting festival for the local garden, 4 Angels Community Garden.

Small community parks
At the intersection of Grayton and Rossiter streets, Brookins Park is a small patch of grass holding a playground, swings and benches. Next to Denby High School on Kelly Road, Skinner Playfield holds amenities similar to Brookins Park, but its grassy space is a bit larger, and its playground includes a small rock-climbing wall for kids.

Convenient interstate access
Interstate 94 runs along the east side of Yorkshire Woods, putting the neighborhood just about 9 miles from downtown Detroit and connecting drivers to West Michigan and beyond. For residents who prefer not to drive, the neighborhood’s roads have plenty of sidewalk space, which they can follow to Morang Avenue or Whittier Avenue to catch a Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) bus.
Internet problems and crime risk
One of the neighborhood's biggest drawbacks, Gracey says, is internet service. “We’re in an internet desert. We’re in Detroit, and we have one provider,” she says. “The rest don’t really provide service here. And our service speeds are less than half what they’re supposed to be.”
The overall CAP Index score for Yorkshire Woods is 7 out of 10, which is higher than the national average of 4.
