Dewitt is one of the Lansing area's most popular suburbs
For decades, Dewitt has been at the top of buyers' lists when they look for communities outside Lansing. "It's one of the most popular suburbs of Lansing, and it has been that way for years," says Realtor Brock Fletcher with Keller Williams Realty Lansing, who's been selling around Lansing for over 20 years. Dewitt is less than 10 miles north of the state capital, but it's a city of its own, with a small downtown, tons of park space and some of the highest-rated schools in Clinton County. "Dewitt is so close to everything in Lansing, but it has enough to make it feel like its own place," Fletcher says. "People don't have to drive outside of town for much."
Everything from early-1900s homes to brand-new suburban construction
Homes in Dewitt were built throughout the 20th century. "The immediate downtown area is where you'll find older, early-1900s homes," Fletcher says. "Everything else was built from the 1970s up to today." Downtown is on the north end of town and has a small grid of older streets. The rest of Dewitt is made of suburban drives and cul-de-sacs, where homes sit on grassy lawns around patches of forest and large ponds. Prices in town are slightly higher than in other Lansing suburbs because of how popular it is. Small ranch-style homes in the suburbs and older downtown homes can cost between $120,000 and $300,000. Most homes range from $300,000 to just under $600,000, including everything from midsize ranch-style homes to recently finished New Traditional designs. Multiacre properties outside town also fall in this range. Large colonial-style homes, lakefront New Traditionals and contemporary Craftsman mansions can sell for about $600,000 to $940,000.
Dewitt's schools are some of the best in Clinton County
Dewitt Public Schools is one of the top-ranked school systems in Clinton County and earns an A-minus grade from Niche. According to Niche, David Scott Elementary is the county's No. 1 elementary school, and Dewitt Middle is the county's No. 1 middle school. Dewitt High is the No. 1 high school in the county. Each of these schools receives an A-minus from Niche. Dewitt High is known for its athletics; in the 2024-2025 season, the Dewitt Panthers football team won the Capital Area Activities Conference-Blue division and made it to the state semifinals.
Parks, rivers and forests throughout Dewitt's suburbs
Dewitt's streets intertwine with wooded spaces and water features like the Looking Glass River. Kayakers can access the river from Riverside Park — just south of downtown — and at Looking Glass Riverfront Park in the city's southwest corner. Across the road from Looking Glass Riverfront Park, Padgett Park Natural Area provides 70 acres of forest. There are also little park spaces and playgrounds tucked into Dewitt's residential enclaves. The city offers athletic fields around the schools on the south end of Dewitt. Golfers play their rounds at Prairie Creek Golf Course, which is open to the public.
Breweries and small shops in downtown Dewitt
Dewitt's small downtown centers around the intersection of Bridge and Main streets. It's lined with storefronts that residents can reach by foot or car. Bridge Street is the primary drag, home to watering holes like Looking Glass Brewing, neighbored by Bridge + Main Market and The Plant Studio. Across the street, Sweetie-licious is one of the Lansing area's favorite pie shops, and Bridge Street Social serves an upscale dinner menu. Farms cover the landscape north of Dewitt, and the Downtown Dewitt Farmers Market showcases the local harvest every Tuesday evening from June to October. There's a Meijer on the east end of town for everyday groceries.
Dewitt Ox Roast is an annual tradition
Dewitt Ox Roast has been the community's annual celebration for almost 80 years. It's held downtown, usually in August. Despite the name, there's no roasting of any ox, but there's plenty to do on the downtown blocks full of vendors, carnival games and live music. The weekend-long celebration also has a parade and an arts festival in Riverside Park, just south of downtown.
Downtown Lansing is less than 10 miles south
Downtown Lansing is just over 8 miles south. As Michigan's capital, Lansing and its surrounding area offer many opportunities, including major medical centers like McLaren Greater Lansing. Michigan State University is in East Lansing, just over 10 miles southeast. Dewitt is also just 7 miles north of Lansing's Capital Region International Airport. Grand Rapids is the next closest city, less than 65 miles west on Interstate 96.
