Rural charm and city convenience meet in Buckingham
Buckingham surrounds the geographical center of Virginia, a rural area with open farmland and verdant pastures. It's location allows residents to enjoy the space and privacy of country living without sacrificing access to city amenities in Charlottesville and Richmond. “I have clients who work in Charlottesville but live in Buckingham because they want that rural feel,” says Khaliyah Barakhyahu, a Realtor with New Canaan Properties at Exp Realty who sells homes throughout the county. “It’s the same thing the other way. You’re not too far from Richmond, so when it comes to shopping, people will do their major mall-type shopping in Charlottesville or Richmond.” With Charlottesville just 40 miles north and Richmond 76 miles east, Buckingham offers a peaceful lifestyle and a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.
Spacious lots and countryside charm across Buckingham County
Homes here offer quiet country living in a private setting. The town’s median lot size is over 1 acre, and some properties have enough room for a hobby farm or homestead. The village of Buckingham is the most densely populated part of the community, with farmhouse-style homes, quaint cottages and 19th-century Greek Revival-style builds along U.S. Route 60. State highways branch off the thoroughfare and wind through the countryside, where ranch-style homes and rustic log cabin-inspired retreats sit on tree-lined lots off long driveways. Newer construction is also scattered throughout Buckingham. Most properties rely on well water and septic systems. Prices for single-family homes generally range from $190,000 to $500,000, though those with significant acreage can sell for upwards of $560,000. Lots sell for $20,000 to $100,000 and offer opportunities for residents to build their own homes. “A lot of communities don’t have HOAs, so you’ll see people who want to come out and build what they want to build,” Barakhyahu says.
Students can attend the Buckingham County Public Schools district
Buckingham County Public Schools earns an overall grade of C-minus from Niche. Residents can apply to send their kids to Buckingham Preschool, which provides full-day prekindergarten programs for at-risk children through the Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI). Acceptance is dependent on VPI guidelines, and the preschool does not yet have a Niche rating. Buckingham County Primary School receives a B-minus, while Buckingham County Elementary School, Buckingham County Middle School and Buckingham County High School all score a C-minus. The Buckingham County Public Schools Gifted Program serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade, and participants engage in specialized enrichment activities throughout the school day.
Car-dependent area within reach of Richmond and Charlottesville
While two-lane roads take residents home, U.S. Route 60 connects them to bigger cities like Richmond. Buckingham is also within 50 miles of Lynchburg. It’s roughly 54 miles to Charlottesville-Albermarle Airport, and Centra Southside Community Hospital is 30 miles away in Farmville.
Nature lovers have access to recreational areas near the James River
The James River winds along Buckingham’s northwestern edge and is a destination for outdoor recreation. Hikers and hunters can explore the waterfront at spots like the James River Wildlife Management Area, which has a boat ramp with year-round river access. James River State Park, about 15 miles from Buckingham, provides more opportunities for hiking, boating and fishing. Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest and Horsepen Lake Wildlife Management Area offer similar outdoor activities, and nearby Buckingham Community Park has a playground for kids. Wintergreen Resort is less than 50 miles from Buckingham for winter sports enthusiasts. Buckingham is also home to Satchidananda Ashram–Yogaville, a 750-acre retreat with various yoga programs and trainings.
Buckingham has a small convenience store, with more options in Dillwyn
Duck’s Corner and the Glenmore Country Store are one-stop shops for gas, snacks and convenience store staples. Several houses of worship support the community, including Maysville Baptist Church and Glenmore Community Church. Family owned farms are also common, and Spring Hollow Farm Market is a few miles east along U.S. Route 60 for fresh produce, Amish baked goods and deli specials. Most shopping and dining happen in Dillwyn, about 12 miles away. The town features Food Lion, Dollar General, a pharmacy and a few casual restaurants. Appomattox is about 25 miles away and offers Walmart, Kroger and Tractor Supply Co.
The Historic Village at Lee Wayside is a destination for events
Community events take place at the Historic Village at Lee Wayside, a living history park where restored buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries offer a glimpse into the past. Seasonal festivities include a spooky Halloween-themed drive-thru and a village Christmas market. An outdoor stage hosts live music during events like the Fall Farm Fest, where locals gather beneath crimson leaves to enjoy food and family friendly activities.
