Dover is small in size but big in history and tradition
Though the City of Dover, Ohio, is smaller than 6 square miles, it's big on history, rural charm and honoring age-old traditions. "It has a quaint little downtown area of old buildings, and the historic homes throughout the area are beautiful," says Holly Able Grimm, Realtor at Re/Max Crossroads Properties. "The surrounding county is scenic too, with rolling hills, lakes and streams."
The small city has no shortage of activity thanks to local museums, all-season parks and nearby golf courses and wineries that take advantage of the miles of rolling hills. "It's a great place to raise a family and an equally great place to retire," Grimm says. "It also helps that the cost of living is low, it's safe and there are parks and trails all around."
Large employers in New Philadelphia
Dover was first named Canal Dover after the only rail stop and canal port along the Ohio and Erie canals. Following the establishment of an electric power plant, coal and steel mills and small manufacturing facilities, the city grew from fewer than 50 residents to the 13,000 it is today. Much of Dover's growth is due to employers in the neighboring City of New Philadelphia. According to Grimm, "Dover and New Philadelphia are twin towns. They're so similar in every way, and you can't tell them apart." Industrial and manufacturing jobs are still prevalent in the area. Cleveland Clinic Hospital is a large employer, employing over 300 physicians, nurses and hospital staff.

Tuscora Park and Dover City Park have all-season fun
Dover City Park is the main outdoor location for sports and seasonal fun, like swimming in the summer and sledding in the winter. "We don't get the snow that Michigan or the part of Ohio along Lake Erie gets, but we still get enough for sledding," Grimm says. Tuscora Park is south, in New Philadelphia, and has an amphitheater, miniature golf course, pool and an amusement park with vintage rides.
Dover residents can take advantage of the open space around the city and visit one of the six golf courses or four wineries within a short drive. Hiking, biking and walking trails surround the city, including a few alongside the Tuscarawas River. The river and its connected creeks are prone to flooding.
