Where everyone wants to be

Ask longtime natives of eastern Louisville where they see themselves in 10 years, and they might say Druid Hills. This Kentucky home-class city of roughly 140 well-appointed homes is where people want to be, even if it’s spending a few hours shopping in that part of town, says Realtor Jackie Strange with Kentucky Select Properties. Strange grew up in nearby St. Matthews and made real estate her second career when she began selling in 2008. “Druid Hills and the Chenoweth corridor are where everyone shops,” she says. “There’s something cozy, inviting and comfortable about the area. You can tell locals take pride in their homes and businesses. It’s a place that feels loved.” Strange lives in the Highlands, about 5 miles to the southwest, but often finds her business and personal life bring her back to Druid Hills.

Homes with curb appeal

The homes in Druid Hills represent a range of styles, from traditional Cape Cods to ranches and colonials. The long, narrow streets of Druid Hills are lined with pin oak and silver maple trees, which residents consider a hallmark feature of the neighborhood. Walking along these canopied streets, it’s easy to see why this neighborhood is so loved. Its curb appeal comes from lush landscaping that is only matched by the well-kept appearance of its homes. A small ranch selling for $400,000 with a laid-brick front walk and ancient silver maple in the front yard can be equally appealing as a large Cape Cod for over $1 million that’s three times the size with boxwoods lining the front porch. Many of these homes are magazine-worthy and feature endless updates over the years and special touches, such as refinished hardwoods, bookcases and other custom built-ins.

From Gothic gateways to golf

Louisville is blessed with many parks, and the Gothic-style grandeur of the Crescent Hill Reservoir Gatehouse is bound to catch the eye of the passerby. What once controlled the water flow at the reservoir is now a refreshing spot for recreation. Residents can enjoy the serene setting as they walk or bike down its iron-gated trail. For neighborhood golf enthusiasts, the Crescent Hill Golf Course is perfect for beginners or experienced professionals. Seneca Park and Cherokee Park, two major recreational areas in the city, are only three miles away.

Go local at Chenoweth Square

When it’s time to shop for groceries, residents often head down to Chenoweth Square. “You can pick up fresh produce at Paul’s Fruit Market,” Strange says. “Lori’s Fish Market is in the same shopping center, and just down the street is Nanz & Kraft Florists, when you need something special for an important occasion or a nice dinner at home.” Speaking of which, 211 Clover Lane has laid claim to its expertise in farm-to-table fine dining since it opened in 1985. The menu changes weekly, also featuring artisan wines and spirits.
