Fairmount is a residential neighborhood in downtown Duluth, known for its access to parks and outdoor entertainment and its proximity to business districts. “Duluth is a tourist destination, but locals love it here year-round,” Mike Raivala, a Realtor with Re/Max, 2 Bridges Real Estate Group said of the region that spans bordering cities in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. “We explore the outdoors with tons of parks and hiking trails or enjoy shopping and dining in our ‘mini-metro.’ It’s hard to run out of things to do because Superior is just across the river. It basically doubles the size of the metro area—still small but full of activity.”

Cabins, Craftsmans and bungalows
Gridded streets divide Fairmount from neighborhoods closer to the St. Louis River. To the west, trails cut through meadows and woods, with several access points from the residential area. The neighborhood's houses and townhouses are spaced evenly, and alleys offer uncovered parking behind houses. In the front, walkways lead up from the street, and shade trees adorn most blocks. “Downtown Duluth has small, unique little neighborhoods that were established and named 150 years ago,” says Raivala. “Some of the homes built here go back to the 1800s and are still in good shape—built from true timber, they still stand tall and don’t break down easily.” Several older houses set farther from Grand Avenue offer large open lots. House styles include Craftsman, cabins, bungalows and cottages, and there are multiple divisions of brick-sided townhouses. Prices range from $150,000 to $250,000, depending on size and condition.
The Fairmount neighborhood has a mixture of two story and single story wood framed homes.

Parks for dogs and humans
Fairmount has several parks within its borders and more nearby. Closest to homes is the Apple Tree Circle Community Garden, on Fremont Street. This half-acre fenced space grows neatly organized rows of vegetables, fruits, flowers and grains. There’s a compost area broken down by type and even two fully mature and productive apple trees, so this is a popular spot for locals to stop by during the week, dropping off their compost and picking up apples or vegetables during harvest seasons. “There’s a lot of community engagement in our parks system,'' says Raivala. “Little pocket parks each have their regulars who visit daily.”
The Keene Creek Dog Park is at the north end of the neighborhood, near the Monarch Highway overpass. Keene Park extends into neighborhoods north of Fairmount and includes sports fields, picnic tables, paved biking trails and a new skate park. The dog park is located within the neighborhood and includes a large, fenced-in field open year-round.
Another neighborhood park is Fairmont Park, located beside the Kingsbury Creek trail. With a playground, picnic area, restrooms and access to hiking trails, this park is most well-known as the home of the Lake Superior Zoo. The only zoo in Northeastern Minnesota and the 19th-oldest zoo in the United States, it offers year-round visitation to its 19-acre exhibits. Among the most popular, brown bears and river otters. The zoo is a popular tourist destination but is also popular with Fairmount residents who can easily cycle or walk.
Outdoorsy folks enjoy Fairmount’s direct access to the Kingsbury Creek Trailhead and the DWP Trail, which both make their way through the meadows west of the neighborhood.

There’s one restaurant inside Fairmount, but plenty more are in the surrounding neighborhoods. Tappa Keg Inn, on Grand Avenue, serves classic American diner food and an assortment of domestic and foreign beers. There’s also a Kwik Trip convenience store on Grand Ave attached to a gas station that provides ice, snacks and frozen meals. Outside the neighborhood, the Spirit Valley Business District has multiple stores, restaurants and bars concentrated around the northern section of Grand Avenue, including Wussow’s Concert Café, a coffee shop that hosts live music, and Jade Fountain Cocktail Lounge, an upscale space with creative décor and tiki drinks. Nearby, Sammy’s Pizza & Restaurant is a popular family spot for its award winning pizza, and locals can get all their groceries at Super One Foods off Bristol Street.
