Fond du Lac is classic Minnesotan neighborhood
With a shape reminiscent of Louisiana and a French name to match, Fond du Lac might seem out of place in Duluth, but a closer look reveals it as a classic Minnesotan neighborhood. With public parks and trailheads leading into the wilderness, plus places to fish and boat the St. Louis River, Fond du Lac is a rustic residential area that enjoys access to downtown while sticking to its rural roots.

Housing styles include ranch-style homes, bungalows and farmhouses
Most of the neighborhood is forested and wild, with few residential streets. Houses here tend towards ranch-style or bungalows with the occasional two-story farmhouse. Some properties are fully fenced, while others have riverfront views. The average house price ranges from $175,000 to $250,000. “Duluth is full of small, unique communities, including Fond du Lac,” said Mike Raivala, a REMAX real estate agent with 21 years of experience in the area. “It’s an old town, where you’ve got little neighborhoods named 150 years ago. Some of the homes built here go back to the 1800s and are still in good shape—built from true timber, they still stand tall and don’t break down easily.”

Outdoor recreation from water sports to nature walks
Although Fond du Lac is French for “bottom of the lake,” residents aren’t limited to one water recreation spot. With access to both the Perch Lake and the St. Louis River, boating and fishing are popular pastimes. Perch Lake Park’s Fishing Pier is a popular spot to hunt for bullhead, bass, perch and pike. Those less inclined towards fishing enjoy spending time at Fond du Lac Park, equipped with tennis and basketball courts, a large field, a playground and productive apple trees. Another option is Chambers Grove Park, a picnic site near the river with walking trails, grills and public restrooms. In the late 1800s, steam-powered boats would ferry visitors from downtown Duluth to the park for riverfront picnicking, and Chambers Grove Park has been popular ever since. In addition to parks, the neighborhood has access to protected public lands. “Fond du Lac is close to the Jay Cooke State Park,” says Raivala. “It’s a very hilly area west of Grand Avenue. You start driving up there, and the houses fade away to forests before you reach the state park. It’s a huge draw for outdoorsy types, with lots of big hills, rolling valleys and tons of birds. People go hiking and sightseeing all the time.”

Shops and restaurants are nearby in Wisconsin
There are no restaurants within the boundaries of the neighborhood, but several options are just across the river to the south. Locals take the Biauswah Bridge into Wisconsin to reach Wabegon Bar & Grill, a longstanding restaurant that has existed under different names since the 1950s. The restaurant calls itself “the only bar in the State of Wisconsin that you can only get to from the Minnesota side” due to the quirks of the state borders and serves classic bar food and their specialty “Wabby Burgers.” Wabegon also serves breakfast on the weekends. Another local favorite is Trophy Lodge Bar and Grill, located past Wabegon, south of Fond du Lac. With expansive views of the surrounding hills and forests, Trophy Lodge’s two-story log cabin is a comfortable place to enjoy a meal or gather with friends and family. The Lodge serves New American meals and has a full bar and tap list that includes beer from several local breweries. The nearest grocery store is an ALDI in Superior, Wisconsin, located 10 miles east of Fond du Lac along State Road 105.
