A former steel community
Downtown Duluth's connection to Lake Superior is well-known, but equally linked are smaller communities to the south with their own slices of waterfront. Morgan Park, about 9.5 miles from the city center, overlooks Spirit Lake to its east -- a spot where the St. Louis River broadens before emptying into the largest of the Great Lakes to the north. The area is historic, with early 20th century cottages reminiscent of the days when U.S. Steel was the dominant local employer. In fact, the one-time company town was named for the corporation's founder industrialist J.P. Morgan.
Less than 2 miles away is a signature natural preserve, which like most attractions in the Duluth area, deliver both winter and summer forms of outdoor recreation.

Older homes by the water
Forests surround clusters of parallel streets in Morgan Park, laid out around 1913 with residences, boarding houses and dormitories, stores, churches, a school and recreational facilities for employees of the plant, which was situated to the south. The community’s easternmost homes are no more than 500 feet from the shores of Spirit Lake. Well-kept sidewalks are neatly spaced between homes and the street, featuring a mature tree in front of nearly every home. The lots themselves average around a tenth of an acre. Home types include three-bedroom cottages and ranch-styles, many of which date to the company-town days. These range in price between $100,00 and $330,000. Homes sell typically within 20 days, but owners tend to hold their properties, with few on the market.

An abundance of outdoor fun
Blackmer Park is about as close to Spirit Lake as visitors can get, perched on the edge of the water with a railroad line sandwiched in between. A baseball field occupies one corner nearest the water, and there's room in the rest of the park for a full-sized and smaller-sized soccer field. Morgan Park's main open space, of the same name, is centrally located with a small playground and volleyball court.
On Spirit Lake, residents can swim, fish, canoe and kayak in the summer and ice fish in the winter -- Minnesota regulations allow anglers to use two poles when the water is frozen. Magney-Snively Natural Area, a mile and a half from Morgan Park, is criss-crossed by the Superior Hiking Trail, offering a panoramic view of Duluth and its lakes and river. A short drive north reveals another high point: Spirit Mountain. “There’s skiing and also cross country at the base of the mountain,” says Realtor Beverly J. Van Alstine of Re/Max Results. “There are lots of great trails in that area too.” In warmer months, a tiny roller coaster that zips through the forest is open at the adjoining Adventure Park.

Locally owned spots to be proud of
Because there are no restaurants in Morgan Park, residents can drive a mile and a half north or south along Route 23 for a bite to eat. On the south side, there’s Trophy Café, a spot that’s open for breakfast foods and lunchtime sandwiches. “Homemade food is so important,” says Trophy Café manager Chris Chelstrom. Duluth is known for its locally owned spots in lieu of fast-food drive-throughs. Two pizza joints alone lie just across the street. Tappa Keg Inn is in the opposite direction for a casual meal and a drink. Grocery shopping at the nearest Super One Foods is about a 4-mile drive.

Catching the bus downtown
Downtown Duluth lies just 9 miles northeast of Morgan Park. Residents can get there in 14 minutes by car or 33 minutes by bus, both of which follow a straight trajectory along Route 23. Reaching Duluth International Airport by car takes 26 minutes, while a bus ride 13 miles in that direction takes about an hour and 10 minutes.
Cleaning up Spirit Lake
That Spirit Lake is now an attraction is the result of a cleanup plan launched in 2022. Industrial toxic waste once contaminated the lake and the connected St. Louis River, prompting federal action. As of July 2024, the lake is now deemed safe to swim in, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
