The shores of the St. Louis River give way to a wooded patchwork of residential streets known as Norton Park. Despite much of the area being forested recreational space, the community is connected to downtown via Route 23 or Interstate 35 for longer trips. Route 23 divides lower-priced older homes from the slightly newer, occasionally-listed riverfront builds. “The waterfront homes are coming on the market, but there’s little new construction,” says Realtor Beverly J. Van Alstine of Re/Max Results. Year-round outdoor sports and activities are integral to life in Norton Park.

Fun in the forests or by the St Louis River
Norton Park is a small, centralized spot with a playground for kids and a sports fields, around which lay the neighborhood’s few residential streets. Forestland makes up the western portion of the community, measuring nearly a square mile. Trails wind through these woods for a fun afternoon hike along Knowlton Creek. Nearby Lake Superior Zoo showcases 140 species such as macaws, tigers and tree frogs. The zoo also offers summer camps and preschool programs. Indian Point Campground touches the water, enticing campers, anglers and hikers. The latter group has access to the waterfront trails, which bend with the curvature of the shore.
However, Norton Park isn’t limited to just hiking and relaxing by the waterfront. The Spirit Mountain Recreation Area is known for year-round opportunities for fun, be it mountain biking along wooded trails in the summer or hitting the slopes in the winter. Skiers of all skill levels are welcome to board the lift to ski runs that range from novice-level to expert.

Ranch and traditional-style homes are common
Much of Norton Park is comprised of forests, so the residential footprint is just over one-tenth of a square mile. Its streets run perpendicular to Route 23, along which buyers will find narrow home lots averaging one-tenth of an acre punctuated by mature trees. Some traditional and ranch-style dwellings offer driveways, while others necessitate street parking. A two- or three-bedroom home on the west side of Route 23 costs between $140,000 and $340,000. Prices rise on the east side of this thoroughfare, with more spacious three-bedroom homes hugging the water. “If you’re looking in the lakeside or woodland areas, that’s where you’re going to get some of the higher-end homes,” says Realtor Macey Solomon of F.I. Salter Real Estate, Inc. These builds fetch around $450,000 to $600,000.
