Small-town living south of St. Louis

The land that is now called the Village of Dupo was inhabited by many cultures over the years prior to the arrival of the railroad. In 1905, as the railroad grew, the town of Dupo was laid out, and in 1907 it was incorporated. Today, though not the bustling railroad town it once was, “Dupo is a good option if you want somewhere with a small-town atmosphere,” says Linda Frierdich, owner of The Linda Frierdich Group of CENTURY 21 Advantage Real Estate, Inc., who has sold many homes in the area. Plus, she says, “It’s a great location to downtown St. Louis.”

Dupo homes with historic charm at relatively affordable price points

The heart of town is primarily laid out on gridded streets, some with sidewalks and many without, and bordered by the railroad tracks to the east and by Interstate 255 to the west. Noise is a factor in some areas, so Frierdich says she encourages potential homebuyers to drive around the area to get a feel for what it’s like. Homes in town were mostly built between the early 1900s through the 1950s, in styles like cottages and bungalows, and are typically 1,500 square feet or less. Many have detached garages on the property. Houses in need of some TLC can be found for under $100,000; updated homes usually range from the mid to upper-$100,000s. Homes in a more contemporary subdivision off South Main Street typically sell in the $200,000s. there are also more rural options with more acreage to be found on the outskirts.

Shopping and dining along South Main Street

Most of the commerce in town is along South Main Street, including services like the fire department and Dupo Village Hall. The dining scene includes a handful of mom-and-pop restaurants. Dairy Land offers burgers and shakes with a retro vibe, conveniently a stone’s throw away from the high school. 5th Street Billiards Bar & Grill is a friendly venue where residents meet up for a game of pool and a drink. Dupo does not have a grocery store of its own or many shopping options beyond a Dollar General; according to Frierdich, residents head to St. Louis, within 10 miles of home, for most shopping or dining needs.
