Small town next to interstate
Sitting near Interstates 81 and 476, Dupont has maintained itself as a small town while the infrastructure evolves around it. Established under its current name in 1917, the area started as a Polish mining town called Smithville. It became Dupont when the explosives company of the same name was built and became an essential part of the mining industry at the time. “A lot of people have residents who came over from Europe, and their families just stayed here,” says Richard Bekanich, a lifetime borough resident. Some houses have been converted into local businesses, including Debbie’s Hair Salon & Spa. Students in the area attend Pittston Area School District, where they can get involved in scientific clubs. Because of the town’s proximity to the interstates, people can easily access groceries, airports and other necessities. Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre Hospital is only 12 miles away.
Array of houses with covered porches
Dupont is filled with various architectural styles that sit on manicured lawns. The small front yards and covered porches make it easy for residents to chat with neighbors next door and as they stroll the neighborhood sidewalks. Three-bedroom bungalows, ranch-styles and Foursquares are all common. Most properties sell for between $125,000 and $250,000, although homebuyers can find some houses for under $100,000.

Fast food chains, including Taco Bell, are 1 mile away, next to Interstate 81. Debbie’s Hair Salon & Spa leaves all their clients with a new look. Residents can get groceries at Aldi or Walmart, part of Pittston Crossings shopping center, within 1 mile of the borough. Lowe’s is 10 miles away, along US Route 11.

Bekanich mentioned that hunting and fishing are popular in the area. “I’m an avid fisherman,” he says. His favorite fishing spot is the northern part of the Delaware River, 55 miles away, but people do not have to travel that far. Pittston St. Patrick’s Parade
Every August, the city of Pittston, which is 3 miles away, holds the Tomato Festival to honor the self-titled “Quality Tomato Capital.” Bekanich said that residents of Dupont are more likely to attend another annual celebration, the St. Patrick’s Parade. Participants dress in traditional Irish gear and can race in the 1-mile-long Leprechaun Loop, competing for best costume and fastest time. Afterward, they can watch the parade and eat, drink and party at restaurants across the city.
Easy access to Interstates 81 and 476
US Route 11 and Interstates 81 and 476 run through Dupont, allowing residents easy access to Philadelphia and other major Pennsylvania cities. New York City is 130 miles away, or about a two-hour car ride. The proximity to the interstate causes more noise and congestion from the traffic. The Luzerne County Transportation Authority has a bus route that takes residents from Dupont to nearby Wilkes-Barre and Pittston. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Regional Railroad Station, 4 miles away, allows passengers to travel along the Reading & Northern Railroad. The Wilkes-Barre International Airport is 1 and a half miles from town with flights to popular US destinations and connects to international flights.
