Hope Valley
Midcentury ranch-style homes to million-dollar estates
Driving around the area’s rolling, wooded hills, one would discover multiple subdivisions with single-family homes in various styles and price points. While a townhouse or a 1970s ranch-style home can be listed in the mid-$200,000s, a Greek Revival mansion with golf course views can cost more than $1 million. There are also 21st-century multi-million-dollar estates, but most properties fall in the $500,000 and $600,000 range. Morgan says most buyers seek the neighborhood’s older homes that have been impeccably maintained, “They’re grand homes on larger lots, beautifully and thoughtfully laid out. There’s great landscaping and high-end finishes — all of the things that we love about luxury properties.” Homes typically sell within a month. “When a house comes on the market, it goes,” Morgan adds.A high school with notable alumni
Hope Valley Elementary has a C-plus on its Niche report card. The school will start year-round instruction for the 2024-2025 school year. Sherwood Githens Middle earns a B rating, while Charles E. Jordan High has a B-plus. Famous Jordan High alumni include Matt and Ross Duffer, creators of the wildly popular Netflix sci-fi series Stranger Things. Durham Academy and Cresset Christian Academy are two nearby private options.Host events at the Hope Valley Country Club
Hope Valley Country Club is the centerpiece of the community. This private club features an 18-hole championship golf course, tennis courts, a resort-style swimming pool and fine dining at the clubhouse. “The country club has wonderful social events. If you’re a member, it’s the place to get married or have your Christmas party,” Morgan explains. At the 30-acre Southern Boundaries Park, residents can shoot some hoops, play a game of tennis or catch a Little League Baseball game. It connects to the Third Fork Creek Trail for miles of biking and running. Garrett Road Park offers a paved walking trail that winds through the woods and a playground with tire swings.Shop for the essentials at The Commons
A slew of nationally recognized and independently owned stores and eateries can be found at The Commons shopping center. Weekly grocery shopping is done at Harris Teeter, group fitness classes happen at Orangetheory and manicures are perfected at LV Nail Spa. Chubby's Tacos is a local favorite for fish tacos and “Chubby changas,” the restaurant’s take on classic chimichangas. Funnel Me Crazy is the go-to spot for gourmet funnel cakes and deep-fried Oreos. Morgan says families often visit the name-brand stores at The Streets at Southpoint. “That’s where you go when you have to seriously shop for your teenager,” she chuckles. “There’s also some great shopping in downtown Durham where you can find one-of-a-kind things,” Morgan explains. So much to do and see in Durham
Duke University is close by, so residents can take advantage of its many affiliated amenities, such as Sarah P. Duke Gardens, the Nasher Museum of Art and the 7,000-acre Duke Forest. In nearby downtown Durham, the Durham Performing Arts Center features live performances, The Carolina Theatre shows classic movies, and the Durham Bulls baseball team plays at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The 1988 movie “Bull Durham,” starring Kevin Coster, is based on the Minor League Baseball club.Quick commutes to downtown Durham and Research Triangle Park
While residents near the country club can use its walking paths to traverse the neighborhood, most residents drive to get around. Downtown Durham is a less than 5-mile drive via South Roxboro Street. Commuters heading to the Research Triangle Park, a major employment hub home to hundreds of companies, is a 7 ½-mile drive. The Chapel Hill city center is 9 miles away. A short drive to Interstate 40 connects residents to Raleigh-Durham International, 13 miles away, and downtown Raleigh, 28 miles away. Cyclists can cross the neighborhood on the paved Third Fork Creek Trail, which connects to bike-friendly streets like Martin Luther King Junior Parkway. That street is dotted with the nearest GoDurham bus stops.
