South Square
Suburban Neighborhood in Durham, North Carolina
Durham County 27707
Wooded residential enclaves
The residential streets surrounding the South Square shopping center are heavily wooded, yielding only to local thoroughfares and winding subdivisions. These sleepy enclaves sometimes have basketball hoops on the road, a testament to the easy-going nature of the residents nearby. Cape Cods and ranch-style homes are among the area’s most popular architectural styles, alongside Colonial Revivals and townhomes closer to the shopping center. These properties tend to rest on spacious lots, offering front and backyard space for small gardens and sheds. Priced between $300,000 and $900,000, most homes hover closer to the $400,000 mark. Apartment buildings are also scattered throughout, primarily accessible along University Drive.Local parks by the country club
The Hope Valley Country Club is just south of most residences, a member-owned club open since 1926. Amenities include a championship golf course, tennis courts, swimming pools and fine dining at the clubhouse. Most folks, however, opt for public recreation at green spaces like Sandy Creek Park, where visitors can peruse more than 100 acres of walking trails. Northeast, Rockwood Park is within walking distance of shops and cafes on University Drive. The playground and basketball court are surrounded by leafy trees. Folks can also find ball fields and courts at Southern Boundaries Park in nearby Hope Valley. “You’ve also got mountains to the west and the ocean to the east,” Jacques continues. “The Triangle smacks you in the center of it all—two or three hours to the mountains, two or three hours to the beach.”Zoned for Durham Public Schools
Families are zoned for Durham Public Schools, beginning at Hope Valley Elementary School. With a C-plus on Niche, Hope Valley prides itself as one of the most diverse elementary schools in North Carolina. In fact, more than 30 active community partners give back to the students. Sherwood Githens Middle School has a B on Niche, and J.D. Clement Early College High School has an A. J.D. Clement specializes in individualized education, allowing older students to earn college credit before graduation. Local private institutions, like Camelot Academy and Cresset Christian Academy, earn an A or above on Niche and enroll kindergarten through twelfth grade.Durham and Chapel Hill’s festivities and home games
Dwelling so close to Durham, residents are privy to the city's most popular attractions and festivities. Neighbors can socialize at annual events like the CenterFest Arts Festival in the fall, or the Durham Night Market in the spring and summer. Duke’s home games are a hit among Blue Devils fans, though Tar Heels fans are less than 8 miles from UNC Chapel Hill’s Kenan Memorial Stadium. South Square's leisure destinations, like Angel Island Fun Park and Bowlero Raleigh, are convenient for rainy days with friends and family.Getting around the Research Triangle
Situated between Durham and Chapel Hill—as well as their associated universities—residents surrounding South Square have access to multiple central thoroughfares. Highway 501, simply referred to as 501, extends about 6 miles north into Durham and about 7 miles southwest into Chapel Hill. Interstate 40 stretches 30 miles south toward Raleigh, passing Raleigh-Durham International Airport about 18 miles into the commute. Duke University Hospital, however, is 4 miles north on campus. GoDurham bus stops extend along University Drive, great for avoiding traffic. “The traffic has increased a lot since the pandemic,” Jacques says. “Because the population here has grown so quickly, traffic starts earlier—around 2:30 p.m. now. It can be tough.”The South Square Shopping Center
South Square Shopping Center is the commercial anchor of the community. Grocery stores like Sam’s Club, Harris Teeter and Fresh Market rest beside Li Ming’s Global Mart, a popular Asian market. Target, Office Depot and other retail outlets are peppered among fast food chains and supply shops. However, the area also offers an array of sit-down eateries and artisan cuisine outside the shopping hub. Eastcut Sandwich Bar is a “down-home hangout” serving leafy green sandwiches and salads on the patio, while Whisk & Rye’s pastries and coffee are great to-go. International dining options, from Thai to Peruvian and Mexican, are also planted throughout the shopping center.
