The convenience of living near the South Square center

In the heart of the neighborhood is the South Square shopping center. The area originally had a two-story mall that was torn down and redesigned. “It’s now a shopping center,” says Charles Davies, broker and Realtor of Davies Real Estate Group with Keller Williams Elite Realty. “When I go there ... it’s always full. Sam’s Club is always busy; Chick-fil-A is always busy.” For dining out, there are other popular restaurants in and around the center, like:

  • Pure Soul, a vegan spot with southern comfort food.
  • Alpaca Peruvian Charcoal Chicken, a local chain that specializes in chicken-based dishes.
  • Sitar Indian Cuisine, a buffet that has been open for over 25 years.
Of course, downtown Durham is known for its diverse collection of breweries, bars and restaurants. Residents can take a short drive to try a new place or stick with a tried-and-true favorite.

Getting around the greater Durham area

Sidewalks are limited in the area, so most people drive to get around, but there are also GoDurham buses that make stops along University Drive. “It’s eight to 10 minutes to downtown,” Davies says. “Then, you can also go to Duke. That’s another 10 minutes.” Davies mentions Duke University is a major employer, and students and fans visit to watch the Blue Devils play. “If you go toward Chapel Hill, ... it’s a 12- to 15-minute drive. They have Franklin Street, which is a ton of entertainment, food, bars restaurants, and UNC is there.” You can use Interstate 40 to drive 13 miles to the Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

The neighborhood is close to Duke University, one of North Carolina and the nation’s top private universities. Many students pursue degrees in biology or computer science. Where to go in South Square when you want to get out of the house

While it’s easy to get out of the house and walk around a store, some people want a quieter venue, like the nearby Southwest Regional Library. The library calendar is usually full of groups like the Social Stitchers sewing circle and children’s story times. Locals can explore the outdoors at:

  • Cornwallis Road Park, which has disc golf and a playground.
  • Southern Boundaries Park, full of athletic courts and fields.
  • Sandy Creek Park, where you can hike along the Sandy Creek Trail.
Some residents become members of the nearby Hope Valley Country Club to play the 18-hole layout, use the outdoor pool and practice on the tennis courts.

Heading downtown for nightlife and entertainment

South Square is a quiet community compared to downtown Durham. Residents take the short drive downtown to dine out, see a game or catch a show. The Durham Performing Arts Center hosts everything from comedy shows to Broadway performances. “People come from everywhere for these shows because they’re so great, and the venue is so amazing,” Davies says. The Durham Bulls Athletic Stadium is home to the minor league baseball team.
