Weaver keeps residents close to jobs, recreation and downtown

On the north side of Durham, the Weaver community is an area with outdoor recreation near subdivisions of single-family homes and townhouses. Many people work at the nearby facilities, including Duke Regional Hospital, the Research Triangle Park or Duke University. Weaver is also a short drive from City Center, so residents have convenient access to some of Durham’s major hubs and employers while enjoying a quiet community.

The community has townhouses and single-family options

The Villages at Independence Park and Bull City North are townhouse communities in Weaver, and properties in these areas tend to sell in the upper $100,000s to $300,000s. For detached single-family homes, prices range in the upper $100,000s to $300,000s for ranch-style homes, while most split-levels and Craftsman homes sell in the upper $300,000s to lower $500,000s. “You’ve got a mix of homes that are being sold that are in need of renovations or were renovated, and there’s an opportunity for some infill lots, but it’s limited,” says Joel Sivertsen, broker with NorthGroup Real Estate. Most subdivisions charge HOA fees, but some homes are outside subdivisions and HOA-free.

Weaver residents are close to a range of job opportunities

Weaver offers short commutes to some of Durham’s biggest employers. “What really makes the community unique is that it’s on the north side of Durham, where they’ve been expanding,” says Carla Sevilla, owner and broker of Glenwood Homes. “So, you’re close to Duke Health and Duke University. You can get downtown or to RTP very quickly, and you’re also close to all the new shopping and dining nearby.” While many residents work at Duke Regional Hospital or Duke, some drive about 11 miles down Interstate 885 to the Research Triangle Park, a campus of tech companies and major corporations. That’s about a 30-minute commute in light traffic. “There are a lot of tech, biotech and biomedical firms headquartered in RTP," Sevilla says. "It’s a big draw to the three different points of the triangle in this region." It’s easy to drive around the city, but GoDurham buses also serve the area and take passengers to downtown, campuses and shopping centers along U.S. Route 501.

Where to shop or dine downtown

And, of course, being this close to downtown has more perks than just making it easy to get to work. “There are shops and restaurants close by,” Sivertsen says. “You don’t have to go all the way to downtown. There are more options if you go downtown, but that’s why [Weaver] is the best of both worlds. You can stay close to home to avoid the traffic and street parking downtown, or go downtown for more options.” Popular downtown restaurants include:

  • Mothers & Sons Trattoria
  • Geer Street Garden
  • The Blue Note Grill
  • Durham Food Hall
There are locally owned restaurants closer to home, like Alpaca Peruvian Charcoal Chicken and Super Taqueria. Chain restaurants are along Route 501, which leads to the Harris Teeter grocery store. There's also a Food Lion in Weaver. You can also drive about 10 minutes to Costco.

Exploring the museum, trails and nearby parks

Weaver is home to outdoor destinations, from a museum to a winding walking trail. You can leave your car in the parking lot before hiking or biking down the Ellerbe Creek Trail, which passes the Museum of Life and Science and connects to Rock Quarry Park. The trail also leads to the Edison Johnson Recreation and Aquatics Center. If you want to use the fitness equipment inside the center, you can pay the daily fee or purchase a monthly wellness package. The museum is across the parking lot from the center and allows free entry to Durham residents on Durham Community Day. “It’s one of the best museums in North Carolina,” Sivertsen says. “You've got people who drive from all over to go there. ... Outdoors, there are baby red wolves and bears and farm animals. Indoors, it’s an educational opportunity for kids and adults. It has over 80 acres, but it still gets crowded on the weekends, so it’s better to go on a weekday if that’s an option.” You might drive up to West Point on the Eno Park to launch kayaks onto the Eno River or walk the trails. The park also includes the Hugh Mangum Museum of Photography, which is free to tour and open on the weekends.

Public and magnet schools are close to home

The highly rated Durham Public Schools district serves the area. Some parents apply to the district’s lottery system for magnet or charter school admissions. The City of Medicine Academy and the Voyager Academy are two nearby schools kids might attend if selected in the lottery. Duke University is less than 5 miles from most Weaver homes. The private research university is considered one of the best in the nation and is known for its biology and business degrees.
