Pennsylvania burough bordered by the Lackawanna River
Duryea is a small-town borough framed by forested mountains and cradled by the eastern bank of the Susquehanna River. The Lackawanna River also flows through the borough, and hiking trails and peaks provide ample outdoor activities. Duryea has developed into a close community, centered around Main Street, with beloved local businesses and shops. The borough celebrates the achievements of its community, boasting itself as the home to Gene Guarilia, who earned four NBA championships with the Boston Celtics. Residents also come together for many community events, such as Halloween hayrides and Little League games. “Everyone here is welcoming; we have great neighbors and a fantastic mayor,” says Jordan Zbegner, a Duryea native and co-owner of the legendary Komensky’s Market. Duryea provides a peaceful, suburban atmosphere 9 miles southwest of downtown Scranton.
Two rivers, mountains and vibrant parks
Duryea’s locale supplies residents with numerous options for outdoor activities. Locals can fish, kayak and walk the trails along the Lackawanna River. Campbell’s Ledge Lookout Trail offers an uphill hike and views of the Susquehanna and Wyoming Valleys. The Healey Playground has hosted recreational activities and various holiday celebrations for over 50 years. The newer Community Park features play areas, athletic courts and a walking trail. These neighborhood venues strengthen the sense of community in Duryea, serving as focal points in the area.

Visitors come from all over the country, including customers from as far as Alaska and the West Coast, for Komensky meat. “People have traveled far to our town for our kielbasa, and those that move away come to back to visit us all the time,” Zbegner says. The Colarusso’s 2.0 Italian restaurant is also situated along Main Street and overlooks the Lackawanna River. Marie’s Diner is a local favorite, serving family-style comfort food. For groceries, Weis Markets is within 1 mile of all residential areas. About 4 miles south, a Walmart Supercenter provides essentials.

Students root for the Pittston Area Patriots
The Pittston Area School District provides public education about 5 miles down the road from Duryea. Elementary students may attend Pittston Area Primary Center, rated B-minus on Niche, and C-graded Pittston City Intermediate Center. Students may then head to Pittston Area Middle School, which earns a C-minus and Pittston Area Senior High School, rated B-minus. Pittston Area Senior High offers an array of programs, including a pep squad, a young lawyers club and the Science Olympiad.
