The Dyess Airforce Base employs most of the city
The Dyess Air Force Base area is anchored by the city's largest employer, yet it's not just military personnel and officers who call this community home. "The military is a major part of who we are here," says Suzanne Fulkerson, owner and team leader of The Fulkerson Group by REAL Broker LLC, a 20-year Abilene resident who's sold homes for nearly a decade. "People respect the military around here. During all four national holidays, we have Flags for Freedom, where we put flags in front of our businesses and all over the base." Subdivisions here are conveniently located within walking distance of elementary schools and the base. Malls, shopping centers and local restaurants just to the south ensure easy access to dining, shopping and entertainment options.

Just 11 miles from Abilene Regional Airport
Commuting is convenient with Dyess Air Force Base centrally located in the community. "A lot of our growth is because of the military," Fulkerson says. "We have a new plane coming to our base, the B21 Bomber. It was supposed to be here in May 2021, but COVID slowed things down. We expect nearly 500 families in the coming years because we will also be home to a training squadron. Anyone flying the plane will have to go through Abilene first." Major thoroughfares like U.S. 84 along the eastern edge and accessible U.S. 277 facilitate easy travel within Abilene. While the area primarily relies on cars, public transportation via CityLink serves local subdivisions. Abilene Regional Airport, just 11 miles east of Dyess Air Force Base, offers six daily direct flights to Dallas, enhancing connectivity for residents. Military personnel benefit from onsite healthcare at the 7th Medical Group, while civilians utilize services at Hendrick Medical Center South, an 8-mile drive south specializing in radiology and diagnostics.
