Situated along the Minnesota River, the city of Eagan attracts Twin City commuters seeking more privacy without sacrificing urban amenities. “Eagan is incredibly convenient for commuting into both Twin Cities,” says long-time local Austin Eaton, agent at Real Broker. “I can be in Minneapolis or St. Paul in less than a 30-minute drive or be at the airport in less than 10. There’s no other community in my mind that’s better.” Established in 1860, Eagan has transformed from its agricultural roots as the Onion Capital of the U.S. into a metropolitan hub of technology and healthcare. Today, the city is also home to employers like Thomson Reuters, a data intelligence conglomerate, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota, a health insurance company both of which account for more than 9,000 jobs in Eagan's workforce. The city is also known for its many trees, which are maintained through conservation efforts and forestry programs that promote ongoing beautification projects. “People move from all over the country for the great quality of life in Eagan,” says Mike Murphy, an Eagan resident of 25 years and a Realtor with Epique Realty. “It has everything; we don't need to leave the city for anything.” Add to that excellent school districts, convenient commercial hubs and a 20-mile commute to and from both Twin Cities, and Eagan stands out as the second-largest city in Dakota County.

Mature residences and lakeside properties
The real estate market in Eagan attracts a wide range of buyers, with entry-level pricing and robust estates backing up to some of the area's many lakes. “Neighborhoods in Eagan are more mature than other areas in the south metro; you’ve got more privacy, a majority of older builds from the '80s to the 2000s and plenty of wooded lots, that are appealing to a lot of people,” says Eaton, who has been selling in the area for over nine years. Most homes in Eagan cost around $380,000, however, prices can fluctuate depending on style, size and location. Here buyers can expect to spend around $100,000 for a one-bedroom condo to upwards of $1.5 million for a newly constructed, five-bedroom traditional home complete with waterfront views. As for new development, its more prevalent on the east side of Eagan. “There’s some new construction, but not as much as other more suburban areas,” Eaton adds. Homes with private lake access are most likely to be more expensive and will start around $700,000.

Community gathering at Eagan Central Park
Eagan is home to 60 parks and around 1200 bodies of water, offering greenery and lakeside recreation close to residents. Eagan Central Park is a primary gathering spot active during the warmer months, with a jungle gym and bandshell for live music performances. The Eagan Community Center (ECC) is located here and offers a variety of amenities, from a fitness center to year-round childcare at Camp ECC. When the weather gets hot, Cascade Bay is a waterpark with giant slides and a lazy river open to season pass holders from June through August every year. With proximity to several lakes, fishing and boating are common. And Jensen Lake has a boat launch and wooded pathways along the Jensen Lake Trailhead, which navigates the body of water. Eagan has four seasons, and residents are accustomed to warm summers and cold winters, with an average of 46 snow days per year. Winter sports, like ice skating, happen year-round at Eagan Civic Arena, offering instructional lessons, public open skate times and designated figure skating and hockey slots.

The annual Eagan Food Truck Festival
Locals gather at the Eagan Festival Grounds every August for the annual Eagan Food Truck Festival. The City of Eagan hosts the event on the first Friday of August from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thousands of residents attend yearly to enjoy live music performances, cold beer and more than 20 local food trucks from around the Twin Cities. Visitors are encouraged to bring folding chairs and blankets, as seating is not be provided. For fresh seasonal produce, the Eagan Market Fest is hosted at the Eagan Community Center throughout the year, highlighting local farmers, vendors and live entertainment. It’s considered one of the top farmer's markets in Minnesota.

Most locals shop at Eagan Town Centre or Central Park Commons along U.S. Interstate-35E, which features stores like Wal-Mart, Hy-Vee and Lunds & Byerlys for groceries and everyday essentials. Name-brand retailers are available at the popular Twin Cities Premium Outlets on the west side, offering retailers like Nike, Saks Off Fifth and Old Navy. Eagan is served by three school districts: Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan Independent Schools, Burnsville-Eagan-Savage Schools and West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan Area Schools. The Eagan-Apple Valley-Rosemount School District is rated as the second-best school district in Dakota County and earns an overall grade of A from the review site, Niche. It's home to 17 elementary schools, six middle schools and three high schools. Most students attend Eagan High School, which offers an advanced curriculum with 12 AP courses. Private options, like Trinity School at River Ridge, are also available nearby.
Commute into the Twin Cities on I-35E
Cutting diagonally through Eagan is I-35E which provides residents with direct access to the Twin Cities and neighboring areas like South Loop and Mendota Heights. Those interested in public transportation can grab a seat on the Minnesota Valley Transit bus at the Cedar Grove Park & Ride Transit Station. When traveling farther outside of the region, the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport is 10 miles away. For healthcare, the M Health Fairview Ridges Hospital is 8 miles from the community.

On average, Eagan experiences lower crime rates than Minneapolis. In 2023, the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, which oversees Eagan, reported 20 violent crimes per 100,000 people. Comparatively, Hennepin County, which includes Minneapolis, reported 124 violent crimes per 100,000 individuals.
