Eagle Pass is a small border town on the Rio Grande commonly known as “La Puerta de Mexico,” or Mexico’s Door. Two international vehicle bridges and one railroad bridge link the city to Piedras Negras, making it the most direct route between San Antonio and Mexico. Unsurprisingly, international trade and border control law enforcement are major pillars of the local economy, along with the healthcare industry. Mexico’s close proximity has also influenced Eagle Pass’s culture. Roughly 95 percent of the population identifies as Hispanic or Latino. “Most people here speak Spanish and English,” says Zenaida Rodriguez, an Eagle Pass resident and Main Street Association Manager. From the cuisine and architecture to annual events, “Our Mexican culture is represented all over the city.”

Golfing along the Rio Grande and the Shelby Park controversy
Small community parks, with playgrounds and public pools, are scattered throughout the city. Maverick County Lake has multiple picnic shelters and a small fishing pier, and Eagle Pass Golf Course overlooks the Rio Grande. The local little league teams practice right across the street on the ballfields at Moncada Baseball Park. Eagle Pass’s largest green space, Shelby Park, has recently become a point of local and national contention. Texas government officials seized the park at the beginning of 2024 and transformed it into the headquarters for Operation Lone Star, a controversial state-led border security initiative. Shelby Park remains closed to the public today despite local protests.

Authentic Mexican cuisine and Southern barbeque joints
Eagle Pass’ dining scene consists of authentic Mexican eateries and Southern-style barbeque joints. Several local restaurants occupy historic storefronts along Main Street, in the heart of the city’s downtown district. A few bars and nightclubs cluster around a portion of the street, known as the 300 Block Art and Entertainment District. This up-and-coming area was first established in 2020 with the opening of the Eagle Pass Art and Culture Center, which now hosts free community art classes, live music performances and rotating exhibits. Fast food chains and national retailers are right off the highway at Mall de las Aguilas.

Mexican and American citizens gather for the International Friendship Festival
For over 60 years, the International Friendship Festival has brought Eagle Pass and Piedras Negras residents together to celebrate their shared heritage. “Everybody gets together to watch the parades and dance in the streets to live music,” Rodriguez says. “It’s really a beautiful celebration of our communities,” Rodriguez says. The Abrazo, meaning “embrace,” is the festival’s main event, where Mexican and American residents greet each other at the International Bridge with a hug.
