High-end homes and city access in Birmingham's Eagle Point suburb
The upscale community of Eagle Point differs from other Birmingham suburbs in its access to A-rated Oak Mountain schools and proximity to the city, about 15 miles away. The area draws families and buyers looking for bigger homes and lots, with streetscapes that include manicured lawns, mature trees and vintage-inspired architecture. "It's one of those things like, you're in the suburbs but because you're close to that 280 main stretch, you're close to everything," says Nadia Wallace, Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Hoover who has been working in the Central Alabama area for about 10 years. "A lot of Birmingham suburbs, you're getting in the car and having to drive several exits to get to somewhere. That's not the case here."
Homes with Tudor touches and generous square footage
Homes include larger New Traditional properties from around 2,000 to upwards of 5,000 square feet. Brick facades and steeply pitched roofs add a Tudor feel, though they typically date from the 1990s and onward. Others have Craftsman, Colonial or contemporary influences. "With the mature trees, it's not a newer-looking subdivision with cookie-cutter houses. All the homes are very pretty, brick, but each is very different," Wallace says. "I think there was initially a builder out there at one time who built some houses, but generally, most of those are custom builders who stuck with the theme, so that's why they all look a little different." Prices typically exceed Birmingham's median, starting around $360,000 and topping between $1 and $1.8 million. HOA fees also factor into monthly expenses.
Oak Mountain schools earn top marks and offer AP and arts programs
Kids can attend highly rated schools within Shelby County Schools' Oak Mountain zone. The pipeline includes Oak Mountain Elementary for kindergarten through third grade, Oak Mountain Intermediate for fourth and fifth grade, Oak Mountain Middle for sixth through eighth grade and Oak Mountain High for ninth through 12th — each earning an A grade from Niche. The high school offers 16 Advanced Placement courses, dual enrollment classes at Jefferson State Community College and well-regarded fine arts offerings. The Spirit of Cahaba Marching Band consistently earns superior and best-in-class awards at annual competitions.
Summertime swims at the private pool and nature hikes at Oak Mountain
The centrally located Eagle Point Swim & Tennis Club offers optional memberships for residents and non-residents. The facility features a pool and kiddie pool, open from May through September, and hosts year-round tennis clinics for adults and kids. Locals gather here for the Fourth of July cookout and fireworks show. The Eagle Point HOA brings other seasonal celebrations, such as carriage rides and visits with Santa in December at the community clubhouse. "It's a big trick-or-treating neighborhood — a lot of families," Wallace says. Almost 12,000 additional acres of outdoor space can be found at the nearby Oak Mountain State Park — the largest of its kind in Alabama. Amid the hardwood bottoms landscape is a 100-plus mile trail network for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, in addition to a golf course, swimming beaches, BMX track and other amenities.
Publix and local eats within easy reach to the north
Strip malls offer various shops, restaurants, salons and other services on Eagle Point's commercial-heavy north side. Publix, Dick's Sporting Goods and Hobby Lobby are less than 3 miles from the community's center. Chains such as First Watch and local Mediterranean, Mexican and sushi restaurants anchor the dining scene. Amore Ristorante Italiano is a favorite family-owned spot that's been serving the area since 2005, with a menu of pasta, seafood and meat entrees and traditional desserts. East 59 Café is a nearby coffee bar and kitchen serving espresso drinks, breakfast items, sandwiches and salads.
U.S. Highway 280 offers easy commutes to Birmingham
Bus routes don't serve the area, and locals mainly use cars for daily errands. U.S. Highway 280 provides a direct route into Birmingham, about 15 miles away. Eagle Point Circle, Eagle Point Drive and State Route 119 are also well-used roads to the area shopping centers. Travelers can book commercial flights from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, less than 20 miles away. The Brookwood Baptist Health freestanding emergency center is about 3 miles north, and Grandview Medical Center offers comprehensive medical care about 5 miles away.
Tornado history shapes emergency preparedness in Eagle Point
Alabama and the Birmingham area are prone to tornadoes. An EF3 tornado impacted many Eagle Point homes in 2021, followed by a lengthy recovery effort as residents worked to rebuild. Many properties here are equipped with basements. Locals can sign up for ShelbyALerts through the county.
