Eagle River, situated in Wisconsin's Northwoods, is known for its location on the of the world's largest chain of freshwater lakes. While Eagle River's permanent population is around 1,600, the 28 lakes in the area make that number spike drastically throughout the year as tourists come and go. "In the summer, we've got 15,000 people up here. It's just a beautiful place with the woods and lakes, and there's no traffic, no noise," says Pam Hupf, a local Realtor with First Weber who's been selling homes for over 20 years. "We've got people coming in from all over the country to buy second homes and vacation here, not just for summer. We're called the 'Snowmobile Capital of the World', so even our winter season is busy." Eagle River keeps a packed schedule year-round between its annual events and various outdoor recreation options. It's anchored by a vibrant downtown scene that locals keep buzzing even when the tourism isn't at its peak.

The older homes in Eagle River are typically renovated ranch-style and split-level homes built in the mid-to-late 20th century. At the start of the 21st century, construction took off with a surge of tourism, and up went modern chalets, contemporary condos with rustic features, and lakeside properties. "Our downtown area is really cute, with lots of little shops and tons of restaurants. Andy's Pontoon Saloon is one of our most popular places," Hupf says. "We never go out to eat in the summer because the restaurants get so swamped." While Eagle River has plenty of convenience stores and grocers like Trig's, most big-box shopping can be done in Rhinelander, 24 miles south.
Annual events for every season, centered around the outdoors
Eagle River features several annual events throughout the seasons, from Fourth of July celebrations to the springtime Up North Beerfest. "Cranberry Fest is in October, it's our last hurrah before winter gets here. It's one of the most popular events," Hupf says. While cranberries might be front and center for the festival, it also features craft vendors and live music. "We also host the World Championship Snowmobile Derby every year, and the races are so cool to see. There's one big flat track, and then one with jumps. People travel from all over the country to compete."
