A New York City bedroom community in East Brunswick

Located among the bustling “Brunswicks,” suburban communities of Central Jersey, the township of East Brunswick attracts residents looking for a New York City bedroom community. Named for the German city-state of Brunswick-Luneburg, of which the kings of Great Britain were rulers, East Brunswick stands out among Central Jersey’s many suburban towns for its great variety of housing options, continuing growth, an abundance of retail, a wealth of nature and a nationally acclaimed school district.

A growing collection of homes and housing developments

East Brunswick’s history dates to the Colonial era, and it retains its centuries-old character, with wide open spaces between homes and housing developments. Local Realtor Andrew Zastko, broker-owner of Gloria Zastko Realtors, says of East Brunswick’s housing, “Around Highway 18, there’s so much development going on, especially with apartments and townhome communities. There are also condominiums, single families and larger estate homes.” East Brunswick has a median home price of $500,000, in line with the state figure and reflecting this community’s increasing desirability.

Highly rated East Brunswick Public Schools

Another major strength of this township is its nationally acclaimed education system. “East Brunswick’s claim to fame has always been the school system, with exceptional Blue Ribbon school criteria for many years," Zastko says. Students can attend one of nine elementary schools, including Lawrence Brook Elementary School, before moving on to Churchill Junior High School. Both schools score an A-minus on Niche. East Brunswick High gets an A on Niche and has consistently received high ratings from the state and national departments of education, as well as from publications such as the Washington Post.

Bicentennial Park and plenty of nature

Large swathes of undisturbed nature and trees are among this area's greatest strengths. “It’s a township that borders the rural Farrington Lake community — with its beautiful homes — and the Bicentennial Park," Zastko says. Created in 1976 to honor the 200th anniversary of American independence, the park is among East Brunswick’s most distinctive features. Bordering the manmade reservoir of Farrington Lake, it includes 34 acres of preserved nature and provides opportunities to fish and kayak in the lake, play soccer and tennis, or even enjoy beach volleyball.

Shopping centered around Brunswick Square Mall

East Brunswick has diverse offerings within its expansive boundaries. “It’s the larger of the surrounding townships, with a mix of different industries, such as shopping, retail and offices on the highways," Zastko says. "You have the Brunswick Square Mall, just off 18, which is a large retail mall and a hub of entertainment; there’s also a lot of different chains on Route 18.” Brunswick Square is packed with shops and activities; visitors can browse the clothing selections at JCPenney and Macy’s, look for new reads at Barnes & Noble, or enjoy seafood at the nautically decorated Twisted Crab.

A commuter hub with multiple transit options to New York City

New York City is typically accessible within an hour to an hour and a half, with the New Jersey Turnpike offering residents of the Brunswicks a straight shot to the Big Apple. “People like the close proximity to the major highways and byways, being close to the turnpike and parkway," Zastko says. "It’s close to local bus terminals and train stations; it’s a commuter hub.”
