Country and suburban living near forests and an airport
East Granby sits on the edge of Hartford, near both Bradley International Airport and meandering trails. But in a lot of ways, East Granby is a small, self-sufficient town of its own, with local restaurants, stores and diverse living options. “East Granby’s got a small-town feel,” says Kathy Murphy, Realtor with KW Legacy Partners who has sold homes in the area for over 10 years. “You can have whatever you wish – there's plenty of neighborhoods where you get the community feels but there's also plenty of open space and plenty of space to yourself.” Suburbs, townhouses and condos can all be found on the south end of East Granby. Other homes sit on lots spanning an acre or more, surrounded by mature trees.
East Granby was originally part of Granby, which was settled in the late 17th century.
Roomy homes on spacious lots
Privacy is characteristic of life in East Granby. Houses are often situated on rarely trafficked, dead-end streets branching off rural roads and ensconced in mature trees. Parcels are spacious and forested, and the median lot size sits at 40,000 square feet, which translates to just under an acre. Down toward Tariffville, the vibe is more suburban. Here, lots are closer to half an acre, and there’s not as much space between homes, but front and back yards are still adorned with verdant trees. Many houses follow Cape Cod, Colonial Revival, New Traditional, raised ranch-style and ranch-style designs. Buyers can also occasionally find colonial builds from the 18th century. Detached homes tend to range from $250,000 to $800,000, with 21st century constructions on the higher end of this spectrum. A few condos and townhouses can be found in the southeast corner of the neighborhood. They rarely enter the market and typically go for between $150,000 and $250,000. East Granby gets a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, which is well below the national average of 4.
The average price for Cape Cod is $375,000 in East Granby.
East Granby homes often feature a single-story layout or modestly sized second stories.

East Granby High students can study at the college level
Prekindergarten through second grade students can attend Carl Allgrove Elementary School before moving up to R. Dudley Seymour School for third through fifth grade. East Granby Middle and East Granby High both share the same building, located just a mile south of downtown. “Granby High has more sports and opportunities than East Granby High, but East Granby really takes care of their own. Two of my children went through East Granby High, and I know teachers are very involved with students,” says Tammy Sorensen, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Northeast Property, a real estate agent who has been selling homes for 2 years. Through the College Connections Partnership Program with Asnuntuck Community College, juniors and seniors at East Granby High can enter a career pathway in advanced manufacturing technologies or business and take one tuition-free college course each semester. Allgrove School has an A-grade from Niche, while R. Dudley Seymour, East Granby Middle and East Granby High schools have respectable B-pluses.

No major highways pass through the neighborhood. Interstate 91 is 6 miles east down Connecticut Route 20. U.S. Route 202 is 3.5 miles west on the same road. Most residents are within a 5-mile drive of Bradley International Airport. “I’ve been living in the area for 15 years. You hear the planes go by once in a while, but they’ve never been a problem,” says Sorensen, who lives on the west side of the neighborhood. Hartford and Springfield, Massachusetts are both 16 miles away.

Dining downtown and shopping on U.S. 202
Many of East Granby’s restaurants are family-owned and clustered downtown. J&G Restaurant and Lounge, also known as J&G Ristaurante, has been serving up grinders, pizza, salad and Italian fare for over 40 years. Gio’s Brick Oven Pizzeria is known for their unique pies, such as Big Mac, BLT and chicken fajita pizzas. “Gio’s serves pizza by the slice, so it’s nice if you just want one piece, or you can get an entrée,” Sorensen says. “They also have a rentable party room that local clubs will use for meetings. Some people rent it for birthday parties.” Aside from burritos and margaritas, TJ’s Burritos is also known for their coffee flights, samplings of a few types of coffee. The venue also occasionally hosts events ranging from a Mother’s Day brunch to a hot dog eating contest. Neighboring Granby offers a few stores such as Geissler’s Supermarket and Beman True Value Hardware. Other options can be found down U.S. Route 202 such as Stop & Shop and Big Y Class Market.

Hiking, golf and a historic prison
A few hiking trails pass through East Granby like the 63-mile Metacomet Trail. “The air quality is amazing there,” Murphy says. “It’s great for hikers; the whole outdoors is great here.” Hikers can take the trail up to Peak Mountain, known for its unique microclimate ecosystems and stunning views of the Connecticut landscape. A trailhead can be found near the intersection of Turkey Hills Road and Newgate Road. For shorter hikes and mountain biking, locals can hit up Cowles Park at the south end of the neighborhood. And Granbrook Park offers a baseball diamond, basketball court and playgrounds. The Old New-Gate Prison holds the distinction of being both the first chartered copper mine in colonial America and Connecticut’s first state prison. Today, the site is open seasonally for tours and hosts a history and art museum. Copper Hill Golf Club and Airways Golf both offer public, 18-hole courses.
