An equestrian and agricultural township in northern Lebanon County
Along the base of Blue Mountain is East Hanover, a rural township at the northwestern cusp of Lebanon County that sits along two major highways. This generally quiet community includes a state park and a National Guard Training Center, but it's better known among residents for its agriculture and equestrian character. “East Hanover is horse central for Lebanon County,” says Realtor Stephanie Butler, who lives south of the township in Annville and has sold homes in the area with Suburban Realty. “It’s near the Penn National Race Course at Hollywood Casino in Grantville, so there are a lot of stables that area farmers sell hay to. Other than that, it’s pretty quiet. A lot of trucks come through that way on Interstate 81, and U.S. Highway 22 goes through there as well.”

From farmettes with modest acreage to tucked-away cabins
Rather than clustering in neat subdivisions, homes in East Hanover tend to be spread out along winding country backroads. These houses range from 1970s ranch-style and split-level homes to early 21st-century New Traditional houses, along with some unique custom-built homes and remote cabins. Farmettes on 1 or 2 acres of land might have outbuildings such as a workshop or a chicken coop, with cornfields surrounding larger farmhouses that have over 10 acres. While most single-family homes are priced from $175,000 to $695,000, manufactured homes can list between $110,000 and $310,000 and may still come with acreage. East Hanover currently has a CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Northern Lebanon Schools are in nearby Fredericksburg
The Northern Lebanon School District serves East Hanover, with schools located a couple of towns over in Fredericksburg. The district is comprised of two schools, both of which are currently unrated by Niche: Northern Lebanon Elementary and Northern Lebanon Secondary School. The combined middle and high school is known for participating in the Four Diamonds Mini-Thon, a fundraiser with the goal of fighting pediatric cancer. In its first nine years, the Northern Lebanon Mini-Thon raised over $188,000 for the cause.
A busy military base and Indiantown Gap National Cemetery
Fort Indiantown Gap is the busiest National Training Guard Center in the U.S., and a large portion of it is located right in East Hanover Township. “You used to be able to drive straight through the base up until a couple of years ago when they closed it off. Now we have to drive around it,” Butler says. “You’ll see military helicopters flying overhead all the time, though.” Noise from the area is generally not an issue, with most sound coming from the nearby highways. East Hanover is also home to Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, which features the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial. Dedicated in 2001, the open-air monument comprises concrete pillars and lonely facades that resemble a war-torn landscape. Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day ceremonies are hosted at the cemetery, in addition to an annual holiday candlelight ceremony in December. “Around Christmastime, they put wreaths on all the headstones,” Butler says. "It’s truly a beautifully maintained cemetery."

Fish or hike at Memorial Lake State Park
Memorial Lake State Park lies near the entrance of Fort Indiantown Gap, at the base of Blue Mountain. A well-known fishing spot, the park also offers kayak and paddleboard rentals, plus a playground and a sand volleyball court near the lake’s shores. Though the park is most popular during summertime, ice skating and cross-country skiing are popular winter activities. H.M. Levitz Memorial Park is less than a mile west of Fort Indiantown Gap and provides accessible trails through the woods. The walking paths lead to wildlife-watching sites such as a bird blind, plus recreation areas including tennis courts, ballfields and a basketball court. The park also features playgrounds and three picnic pavilions that are available to rent. “I was just there for a pig roast with my family,” Butler says. There are more outdoor areas to explore between the Blue and Second mountains, including Swatara State Park and State Game Lands No. 80.

Wineries and breweries with views of Blue Mountain
In the rolling hills of East Hanover, farms outnumber shops and restaurants handily. Most businesses cluster around the interstate by Fort Indiantown Gap or in nearby Grantville, where the Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course is located. The thoroughbred racetrack and casino is a popular entertainment destination, housing 2,480 slot machines and 54 gaming tables with over 150 live horse races throughout the year. The casino also hosts an outdoor concert series on its PENN Heroes Stage, bringing in big names such as Sam Hunt and Bret Michaels. Many horse stables and equestrian centers are in East Hanover, alongside local produce stands and even some scenic wedding venues at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Residents can take in the views while sipping on wine flights at J&P Winery and Vineyard, or head to Snitz Creek Brewery for a bite to eat over craft pints in its pet-friendly garage bar. Grocery shopping typically necessitates a trip down to Annville or Palmyra, where there’s a Walmart Supercenter about 5 to 15 miles south.

Interstate 81 and U.S. Highway 22 pass through the area
This rural neighborhood requires a car to navigate, but major highways make it well-connected. U.S. Highway 22 runs east-west through the township, as does Interstate 81, which connects to Interstate 78. Lebanon is roughly 10 to 20 miles southeast, while the Pennsylvania State Capitol and Harrisburg International Airport are approximately 15 to 25 miles west. Philadelphia and its many attractions are about 95 to 105 miles away.
