A residential Cape Cod village near the Atlantic

East Harwich is one of seven villages in the town of Harwich, which sits near the end of the Cape Cod peninsula. With Pleasant Bay just offshore and an array of kettle ponds within, residents can easily find spots to spend the day outdoors, or shop and dine along the Brewster-Chatham Road corridor. Classic New England homes line streets near the water, offering whiffs of ocean breeze to residents just beyond their front doors. Locals can get to the rest of Harwich, or neighboring towns like Chatham, within a short drive, and Route 6 links the community with the rest of Cape Cod and the mainland farther west.

Classic New England homes on the peninsula

East Harwich mostly consists of single-family homes. Smaller ranch-style and Cape Cod homes cost between $600,000 and $850,000. Waterfront properties and larger colonial-style or custom homes often go for over $1 million. “There is some really lovely waterfront on Pleasant Bay,” says Barbara Garside, a broker associate with Coastal Chatham at EXP Realty. “Most of the Cape is Cape Cod homes … A couple new subdivisions have been done all in Cape styles, but with modern interiors.” East Harwich has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.

Cape Cod recreation at ponds, state parks and the ocean

Like many parts of Cape Cod, kettle ponds dot East Harwich. Locals can swim, fish or paddle kayaks and canoes at some of them, including Bucks Pond, John Josephs Pond and Long Pond. The Cape Cod Rail Trail, which spans around 25 miles from Yarmouth to Wellfleet, passes by East Harwich and is open to walkers, runners and bikers. “Harwich has really done a nice job with hiking trails,” Garside says. “There are quite a few … They’re very well-marked and it’s been fun to explore a lot of those trails.” Just offshore, Pleasant Bay is popular for swimming, boating and fishing; Pleasant Bay Community Boating is open to the public and offers sailing lessons, rentals and events. Other recreational spots include:

  • The Captains Golf Course, Cape Cod National Golf Club and Cranberry Valley Golf Course close by
  • Hawksnest State Park in the northwest corner
  • Olivers Pond Wildlife Management

Drivers hit Route 6 to get around the peninsula

Route 6 runs along part of the neighborhood’s north side and is the primary connection to the mainland. “Route 6 is your feeder up to Providence and Boston,” Garside says. “To get off the Cape, Route 6 goes over the bridge.” Boston and Providence are each more than 80 miles away. The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority provides public transportation, with its H2O Hyannis-Orleans and Flex bus lines making stops in central East Harwich. Pleasant Lake Medical Center sits just west of the neighborhood. Air travelers can head to Cape Cod Gateway Airport, less than 20 miles west in Hyannis, or Boston Logan International Airport, over 80 miles away.

Shopping and dining along Brewster-Chatham Road

Brewster-Chatham Road is the main commercial corridor of East Harwich, lined with chains and some local restaurants in the center of the neighborhood. Stop & Shop is the area’s anchor, close to CVS and Ace Hardware. “If you live in East Harwich, all that is right down the street,” Garside says. “Between those three, you’re in and out of those all the time.” Shoppers can also go to Target, less than 20 miles west in Hyannis, for everyday items. For dining, the 400 East Restaurant has classic American dishes across from the Stop & Shop. NYC Twisted Pizza also sits on Brewster-Chatham Road. During the summer, the Outer Bar & Grille at the Wequassett Resort and Golf Club offers seaside dining.

Education within the Monomoy Regional School District

The Monomoy Regional School District serves the East Harwich neighborhood and is highly rated by Niche. Harwich Elementary School, Monomoy Regional Middle School and Monomoy Regional High School are all well-rated within the district. “There is school choice on Cape Cod, so you could branch out depending on where you live,” Garside says.

Coastal events on Cape Cod

The Wequassett Resort and Golf Club puts on events like a Merry Market during the holidays. “They did a marketplace for Christmas at the hotel and then topped it off with fireworks over Pleasant Bay,” Garside says, adding the bay also has fireworks for the Fourth of July. The Harwich Chamber of Commerce facilitates other events in the area. Port Summer Nights – Wednesday Night Music features various bands throughout Harwich Port, which sits near the coastline. About 3 miles away, the Harwich Community Center hosts the Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music Festival each fall with live music, activities and food trucks.
