History, affordability and plenty of parks in East Setauket
The historic hamlet of East Setauket, sometimes called Setauket—East Setauket is perched on the Long Island Sound waterfront. The community is famous for its connections to the American Revolution, from the Battle of Setauket to being home to the Culper Spy Ring, whose intelligence turned the tide of the war. Today, this history is displayed proudly around town, while residents live in stately coastal homes and are within reach of several vibrant parklands for recreation.
Hiking, swimming and cycling across the neighborhood
Laurel Ridge Setauket Woods Nature Preserve is an expansive glacier moraine woodland park within Setauket, with 26 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. To the north is Flax Sand Beach along Long Island Sound. The beach allows for swimming and paddling at safe tidal times, while anglers can catch striped bass and flounder. There are also designated zones at the beach for waterfowl hunting. The 3-mile Setauket Greenway Trail is a paved multipurpose path developed in the late 2000s, and it has improved pedestrian access around town, stretching from Setauket to the neighboring Port Jefferson Station community.
Midcentury homes on spacious suburban lots
East Setauket's home market ranges from $680,000 to $1.3 million, varying by age, square footage and lot size. “It's not the Hamptons or Nassau County; it's more affordable," says Lynn Sabatelle, a Long Island local and associate real estate broker with Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty. "However, this little area is becoming increasingly expensive, so people usually stay here for a long time. It's not really a transient community." Buyers can find ramblers, bilevels, Colonial Revivals and Craftsman-style condos built from the end of World War II through the 1990s. A drive through the community reveals wide residential roads lined with shady front yard trees. Lawns are often spacious, as this suburb was settled on age-old rolling farmland.
Historic landmarks with Revolutionary War ties
Caroline Episcopal Church is a historic landmark, hosting services for almost 300 years. It's also beside the grounds of the Battle of Setauket, a skirmish during the American Revolution when British loyalists fought American militiamen who came from Connecticut by boat. The church building still has several bullet holes from the battle. History buffs can also travel to Patriots Rock, a massive boulder where the Patriot forces planned their attack on the loyalists. The Three Village Historical Society offers walking, biking and kayak tours around Setauket for folks to learn more about the area's history.
Big-name retail and local dining options around town
Suffolk Plaza is a strip mall on the community's south end featuring Walmart, BJ's Wholesale Club and Kohl's. Farther north on Main Street, Se-Port Delicatessen is a community institution serving signature hero sandwiches, burgers and sweet potato waffle fries for over 30 years. Rolling Pin Bakery in Three Village Shopping Plaza offers everything from cookies to muffins to custom wedding cakes.
Home to Three Village Central School District, neighbors to Stony Brook University
Three Village Central School District serves the Setauket area for education and is ranked by Niche as the No. 2 best school district in Suffolk County. Students can attend nearby options like Minnesauke Elementary or Setauket Elementary; both rated an A on Niche. At the same time, Paul J. Gelinas Junior High and Ward Melville Senior High School both have A-plus ratings. East Setauket is also a neighbor of Stony Brook University to the west, a public research university with around 26,000 students enrolled as of Fall 2024. Though the campus is large, East Setauket is more known as a landing spot for university employees rather than students, due to the higher concentration of homeowners.
Locals can reach New York City by car or train, or Connecticut by ferry
"It used to be more of a commuting area, though not so much today because a lot of people work from home," says Sabatelle. "A lot of people work at Stony Brook or Brookhaven National Laboratory nearby." Locals can head a couple of miles west to the Stony Point LIRR station to access major hubs across the island or to Manhattan in about two to three hours. Drivers can reach Manhattan in two hours along the Long Island Expressway. The Port Jefferson – Bridgeport Ferry is a mile east of home, heading from Long Island to Connecticut in about an hour. Long Island MacArthur Airport is 16 miles south and offers domestic and international flights.
