Eden Township is a farming community near Quarryville
Farms stretch for miles in every direction in Eden Township, a rural community on the south side of Lancaster County. “This is a great place for people who want to get away from the busyness, the loud noises or the poor air quality of city life,” says Szilvia Troutman, who has been the township secretary since 2012. As elsewhere in Amish Country, it’s common to share the road with a horse and buggy. However, while this is indeed a slow-paced township, it’s also right next to the borough of Quarryville , where locals go to shop, dine out and attend community events. “It’s definitely a small town, but much more developed than we are,” Troutman says.
Homes with acreage and farm views
Single-family homes dot the township’s country roads, many offering views of farmland. Ranch-style homes, Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals from the mid-1900s through today are common, typically with half an acre to 2 acres of land. Prices generally range from around $315,000 to $600,000. Farms and larger upscale homes range from $750,000 to $1.2 million. Manufactured homes are also available from $80,000 to $115,000. The township receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Produce stands in the township, more businesses in Quarryville
Local produce stands and markets are all over the township. Locust Hill Farm Market sells milk, ground beef, baked goods and other locally sourced and homemade products. Quarryville has a Giant for more groceries and household essentials. The closest restaurants are also in Quarryville, including C.R. Lapp’s Family Restaurant and Quarryville Family Restaurant, both serving comfort food. There are also a few pizza shops, Son’s Italian Ice & Ice Cream, and J&B Hotel, which is actually a dive bar.
Internship opportunities at Solanco High School
Students may attend Bart-Colerain Elementary School, which receives a B grade from Niche, or Quarryville Elementary School, graded C-plus. Smith Middle School and Solanco High School both receive a C-plus grade. The high school’s internship program allows students to gain hands-on experience with local businesses.
Getting to Lancaster and Philadelphia
U.S. 222 runs through Quarryville and is the closest major highway. It takes approximately 30 minutes to drive to Lancaster , which is less than 20 miles away. Philadelphia is about a 2-hour drive. Travelers can fly out of Philadelphia International Airport, which offers flights to more than 130 destinations.
Enola Low Grade Trail and nearby parks
The Enola Low Grade Rail Trail is a popular destination for hikers and bikers. It follows a former line of the Pennsylvania Railroad, stretching 30 miles through woods and farmland. The paved part of the trail ends in Eden Township. “The goal is to continue developing the trail," Troutman says. " Bart Township is to our east, then Sadsbury Township is just east of that, and the goal is to connect all these townships to the rail trail.” More outdoor activities are available in Quarryville, including Memorial Park, which has a fishing pond, a playground and a community pool, plus fields for youth sports.
