A new town many call home
“Edgwater sits at the bottom of a beautifully forested cliff on the shore of the Hudson River, giving it an amazing view of the New York City skyline,” explains Tyler Sellers, a local Realtor who’s worked in the area for 5 years . But this New Jersey borough has more than just great views. A bustling shopping and dining scene, parks within walking distance of many homes and solid schools are some of the key draws to the area. Just south of the George Washington Bridge in New Jersey, Edgewater is a borough offering the perks of both big city living and small-town accessibility. .

Parks for a little fun and parks for big events
The Edgewater Recreation Department maintains and operates multiple parks situated in the city’s northern end, closer to residential areas. While the department maintains smaller spaces to provide families with easy access to casual recreation, it also maintains the Grand Cove Marina for ferries and tours. Veteran’s Field Park is the largest space and it's used to host community events like the autumnal Edgewater Fall Bazaar or sporting events. The department operates in the Edgewater Community Center too, offering an indoor space for hobby classes.

A haven for housing near Manhattan

Sellers says, “Edgewater is thought of as a premium town, but it’s so much more affordable than Weehawken, Jersey City, and the other towns along the Hudson River.” The median price for a home in the borough is around $700,000, part of a rising price trend that still sits under other local markets. Most of the area’s properties are townhouses and duplexes, making the classic single-family home rare on the market with a median price of about $1.4 million.

River Road has four shopping centers
Residents can browse River Road for shops. The largest shopping locations in the area are the city’s four malls. First, there’s Edgewater Commons, which hosts stores like T.J. Maxx. Then there’s Edgewater Towne Center with a bicycle store and an indoor golf course. Finally, there’s Edgewater City Place, home to a spa and an Express Everyday Denim store. For grocery shopping, there’s Edgewater Marketplace, which houses a Trader Joe’s and Kuppi Coffee Company Cafe.
Both River Road and the city’s piers are home to a diverse list of dining options. Sellers says, “The majority of local restaurants right now serve Asian dishes like sushi. Steakhouses, seafood places and a whole bucketload of other options are here as well.” Pier 115 is one of the city’s most popular restaurants. The eatery draws customers from all over New Jersey and New York with its views of Manhattan across the Hudson.

The annual Edgewater Arts Festival brings the city together
Edgewater looks to its Cultural and Historical Committee to preserve, collect and disseminate historical and cultural artifacts and information. Made of members appointed by the mayor, the Committee is mainly responsible for collecting artifacts pertaining to local history for display in the planned Edgewater Cultural and Historical Museum. The committee is also responsible for organizing an Annual Ford Assembly Plant Vintage Auto Show concurrent with the Edgewater Arts Festival. The Edgewater Arts Festival is an event run by the Edgewater Arts Council. The festival takes place every year, inviting local artists to display and sell their work to attendees at the former Ford Assembly Plant. This 23-year-old tradition began in 1991 with eight artists and less than 300 attendees and is now the city’s most popular public event.
Walking by the water’s edge
The borough’s sidewalks are prevalent and wide, permitting easy pedestrian movement from the home to the pier to the shops and restaurants, making for a walk score of 81. Those looking to travel to neighboring boroughs can rely on the NJ Transit bus system, which has routes running through River Road. Edgewater’s Ferry Landing provides quick and easy travel across the Hudson River. Sellers says “Without the traffic and water in the way, folks can get from Edgewater to New York in just a little over 20 minutes.” Folks looking to get around with their car can use River Road to hop on Interstate 95. Nearby Newark Liberty International Airport is a 15-mile drive southwest.
