Mixing rural habitats with urban industry

The landscape of Edgewood is primarily defined by the crawdad-filled creeks along the region’s edge and the density of commercial warehouses. With a blend of this rural and urban atmosphere, Edgewood might attract folks looking to live near nature or near industrial employers. "A lot of people move to this area for the proximity to APG, or Aberdeen Proving Ground. It’s number one for jobs in this area,” explains Lee Tessier, a 40-year Baltimore native and Realtor at EXP Realty with more than 20 years of experience in and around Edgewood. Occupying around 13,000 acres of land, APG is a diversified military installation that was placed on the EPA’s National Priorities list in the 1990s for chemical and toxic waste testing. Since then, cleanup work at APG has been ongoing and the most recent EPA review concluded that the remedies are protective to the surrounding environment.

Suburban colonials and waterfront bungalows

“Options in Edgewood trend towards the lower end of the price point,” says Tessier. Sidewalks weave through the area’s residential pockets, where most subdivisions stay quiet with driveways and private backyard fencing. Mobile home, townhome and condominium communities offer 1,000- to 1,500-square-foot units anywhere from $50,000 to $350,000. Larger Split levels, cottages and colonials can grow in size up to 3,000 square feet and typically range between $300,000 and $500,000. “There’s also one section on the water,” adds Tessier. “Most of those homes include private piers to dock your boat.”

Hikes through nature and estuary education

Locals might plan a hike at the Bosely Conservatory, a part of Edgewood’s Otter Point Creek nature reserve. Or they might head to the other side of Otter Point Creek to learn more about the Chesapeake Bay at the Anita C. Leight Estuary Center. For a more rigorous hiking experience, Gunpowder Falls State Park offers miles of trails, a beach and a marina to launch the kayak. Exton Golf Course is a 9-hole starter course open during the spring and summer months. Little league and pick-up basketball games take place at Edgewood Recreation and Community Center, where community gardens and a playground await outside.

Commuting to nearby cities via I-95 and MARC

With Edgewood’s proximity to Pulaski Highway and Interstate 95, as well as its very own MARC/Amtrak train station, residents can commute with relative ease to the nearby cities of Towson, Baltimore and even Washington D.C. Another option is the Harford Transit bus system, with several stops dispersed throughout town.

Retail and local dining on Route 40

Residents head to U.S. Route 40 for everyday essentials, where drugstores, banks, gas stations, grocery stores, and casual eateries reside. A local favorite is Island Spice, a tropical-themed grill and lounge that serves Jamaican jerk chicken. Nearby in this retail intersection are big-name stores like Target, Wegmans and Walmart, as well as fast food chains. Venetian Italian Eatery offers a breakfast menu in the morning and Italian classic cuisine for the rest of the evening, staying open late into the night. Food Lion is the local grocer, centrally located in Edgewood.
