Country living amid Edgewood’s sprawling plains and mountain ranges
Around 33 miles east of Albuquerque, Cedar Grove is a small community surrounded by the Sandia Mountains' towering pines and Edgewood's grassy plains. “The stars, the moonrises, the fresher air—people want to move here because it's a beautiful, remote community,” says Dewey Potter Junior, an Associate Broker with Coldwell Banker Legacy, who’s bought and sold properties in the neighborhood. “I’ve sold lots in this area, and the people I’ve worked with love the country living here.” Cedar Grove earns its name for the juniper trees and piñon pines of South Mountain, a dormant volcano in the community’s northeastern corner. Although Cedar Grove is largely undeveloped, and homes come with acreage, Potter says subdivisions like Tierra Encantada foster a strong sense of community with neighborhood picnics. The nearby Interstate 40 and famous Route 66 also connect commuters to Albuquerque, and the Cedar Grove CAP Index Score is a 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Custom-built Northern New Mexico homes and spacious lots
Set along secluded dirt roads, Cedar Grove’s homes are surrounded by wild desert grasslands, juniper trees and views of the imposing South Mountain. Most are custom-built Northern New Mexico-style homes from the 1990s to 2010s in gated subdivisions like Tierra Encantada; common features include bright stucco exteriors, pitched metal roofs and long, gated driveways that allow the homes to sit far from the street. Lots range between 2 and 5 acres and are often used for greenhouses, garden spaces and horse stables if the land is flat enough. These homes rarely come on the market, but prices typically range between $390,000 and $700,000, with larger lots fetching higher prices. The Tierra Encantada community also has $22 monthly HOA dues that go toward maintaining the subdivision’s roads.
The rest of Cedar Grove consists of 2-to-10-acre plots of undeveloped land filled with juniper meadows. According to Potter, most Cedar Grove residents use their land to build their dream homes and horse stables amid the Sandia Mountains. Prices for these lots typically range between $40,000 and $85,000, with acreage and seclusion amid the area’s trees shaping prices.
Sun Mountain and the Cibola National Forest
The 8-mile South Mountain Trail climbs through the grassy valleys, shady groves of piñon pines, and lava-formed arroyos of South Mountain; from its meadowed peak, locals can catch views of Cedar Grove’s grasslands, homes and horses. Pets are prohibited from climbing the trail in order to preserve the ecosystem of South Mountain.
Around 13 miles west of Cedar Grove, the Cibola National Forest spans over 1.6 million acres across the Sandia Mountains, its sprawling wilderness filled with hiking trails, tree-shaded meadows and, in the wintertime, ski slopes. According to Ashley Herring, an Albuquerque local and Associate Broker with Weichert, the Sandia Crest Trail is the highest and most popular hiking trail here; at an elevation of over 10,000 feet, it traverses over 26 miles of rocky mountain tops, pine groves and rare plants like the dusky penstemon flower, known for its smoky purple petals. “You can drive up to the Crest from Cedar Grove, but on the Albuquerque side of the mountains, there’s a tram that takes you all the way to the top,” Herring says. The Cedar Crest Country Cottage and Stables here also invites locals to go horseback riding amid the mountains’ flatter trails and offers stable rentals and horse boarding.

Wildfire Risks in Cedar Grove
