Sandia Mountain views and spacious ranches near Albuquerque
Set 28 miles from Albuquerque and east of the Sandia Mountains, Thunder Mountain offers hillside estates and sprawling horse properties in the small town of Edgewood. “Its location is one of the key things,” says Margaret Ebbens, an Associate Broker with ERA Sellers and Buyers Real Estate. “You’re close to central Edgewood, so you get the rural feel and the hillside views, but you’re still close enough to Albuquerque if you work there.” Interstate 40 and the famous Route 66 are less than a mile south, providing a straight-shot commute to the city. Neighbors here gather at local parks and churches, and the community scores a 1 out of 10 on the CAP Crime Index, lower than the national average of 4.
Custom-built Northern New Mexico and Santa Fe homes
Most homes in Thunder Mountain were custom-built in the Northern New Mexico style between the 1980s and ‘90s; common design elements include bright stucco exteriors and pitched metal roofs. These two-to-four-bedroom homes sit in either the juniper-studded hills or on the flat grasslands surrounding them, and are set on 2-to-5-acre lots used for garden spaces, detached guesthouses, and horse stables. Prices range from $300,000 to $560,000, depending on a home's bedroom count and lot size.
A handful of Santa Fe-style homes from the 1980s and ‘90s are also available, with flat roofs, earth-toned stucco exteriors and rambling layouts reminiscent of Native American Pueblos. These two-to-three-bedroom homes sit on the flat grasslands surrounding Thunder Mountain, often on 2-to-3-acre lots used for horses. Prices range from $425,000 to about $500,000.
Undeveloped lots can be found throughout the area, and according to Ashley Herring, a local Associate Broker with Weichert, they come with impressive views of the Sandia Mountains. Lot sizes vary between 2 and 5 acres, ranging between $40,000 and $70,000.
Edgewood’s recreation centers and the Cibola National Forest
Thunder Mountain is surrounded by desert spaces, wildlife habitats and Edgewood's community parks. Immediately south, the 30-acre Edgewood Equestrian Center offers tree-shaded nature trails for horseback riding and dog walking, and the neighboring Wildlife West Nature Park is an educational animal sanctuary with mountain lions and a ghostly-white barn owl named Casper. Just east of Thunder Mountain, Venus Park has a multi-purpose field studded with benches and soccer pitches; in 2023, the City of Edgewood was awarded a $1.3 million grant to expand the park; as of 2024, they plan to introduce new turf fields for additional sports facilities and a new dog park.
Around 12 miles west, the Cibola National Forest spans over 1.6 million acres across the Sandia Mountains and its sprawling wilderness. “You can drive up all the way to the Sandia Crest, where there are picnic areas, plenty of hiking trails, and ski slopes if it’s snowed enough,” says Herring. The 26-mile Crest Trail crosses through the Sandias’ pine groves and rocky outcroppings. During the winter months, the Sandia Peak Ski Resort invites visitors to enjoy its 35 runs; with a family-friendly focus, the resort offers free season passes for children aged 12 and under.
Groceries in central Edgewood and fine dining in the Sandia Mountains
“Edgewood is a small town, but it’s not completely remote, so there’s still a few grocery stores and restaurants there,” Ebbens says. Around 4 miles east, central Edgewood is home to a Walmart Supercenter and Smith’s grocery store, and the Tractor Supply Company here offers supplies for home maintenance and agriculture, like livestock feed. At the Pizza Barn, diners can enjoy signature pies like the chile-covered “Route 66” pizza and over 20 beers on draft. The family-run China Chef is also one of the only Chinese take-out restaurants in the East Mountains area.
Locals can also grab fresh produce between May and October at the Cedar Crest Farmers Market, hosted every Wednesday in the Sandia Mountains. Afterward, they can enjoy a fine dining experience at the Ten 3, which sits at the very top of the Sandia Mountains, overlooking Albuquerque’s shimmering lights below.
Local Moriarty-Edgewood Schools
Local kids can attend Moriarty-Edgewood Schools, including Route 66 Elementary, which earns a B from Niche, and Edgewood Middle, which receives a B. B-minus-rated Moriarty High is known for its successful sports teams; the Moriarty Pintos’ most recent state championship came in 2023, when they placed first in the 400-meter race.
Interstate 40 and New Mexico’s most famous roads
Thunder Mountain is less than a mile north of Interstate 40 and the historic Route 66; both roadways lead 28 miles west to Albuquerque and 4 miles east to central Edgewood. Thunder Mountain also lies 19 miles west of New Mexico State Road 41; better known as the “Turquoise Highway,” this road runs 40 miles north to Santa Fe, crossing through remote artist communities along the way. The Edgewood Health Center is 3 miles east, but the Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital, 21 miles west in Albuquerque, is the closest medical center with an emergency room. The Moriarty Municipal Airport is 17 miles east, and the Albuquerque International Sunport is 30 miles west.
Community water from the Entranosa Water Association
Although access to water rights can be a struggle in the Sandia Mountains and Edgewood areas, Thunder Mountain residents can rely on community water sources. According to Herring, residents get their drinking water and sewage utilities from the Entranosa Water Association; monthly dues are based on water meter readings taken on the 26th of every month.
