Edmeston offers country living and local employment near Cooperstown
At the western edge of Otsego County, the town of Edmeston offers deep-rural living and direct highway access to Cooperstown. Around 1,900 people live there, whether in the hamlet of Edmeston or in historic properties along rural roads. “There’s a lot of nice country homes there,” says Patrick McNeil, an associate broker with the Parker Walsh Team of Keller Williams Upstate NY Properties. “There’s not really any new development there.” Hops production has long powered the local economy, although the local primary care practice, NYCM Insurance and manufacturing sector are also major employers. “The Chobani Factory is there – that’s where it all started,” McNeil says. “It’s a huge employer.”

Nearby, the 1,400-acre Plainfield State Forest offers primitive camping, fishing at Chimney Pond and additional hunting opportunities. Charles E. Baker State Forest’s 9,400 acres of preserved nature include trails for hiking, horseback riding, cycling and snowmobiling. Edmeston’s western boundary is lined with racing venues, including the Jack’s Racing motocross track within Edmeston and the Unadilla Raceway across the border with New Berlin. Dirt-bike races have been a fixture of Edmeston entertainment since Unadilla Motocross’ founding in 1969, and the course hosts part of the AMA Motocross Championship.
